Mexicana's A320s In MEX's High Altitude

Hey guys,

I've had the chance to speak with 5 friends of my family which frecuently fly between MTY and CCS. All of them fly MX because 2 of them have their US VISA expired, 2 are female and don't want to take their bags off the carrousel twice when connecting in the USA and the other one doesn't like the US Inmigration queue line.

They all flew to CCS between July and August. All of them had delays in their MEX-CCS flight because the plane was overweight and they asked for volunteers with checked bags to get off the plane and put on the next day's flight. The number of requested volunteers fluctuates between 4 and 10!

You have to consider that the flight departs MEX at 1AM in the morning when the temperature is slightly cool.

So my point is... why is MX operating the A320 to CCS when they have to takeoff with a heavy payload restriction? Is it because of the monopoly they have in route? Their extreme high fares make up for the compensation paid to the pax who were taken off the flight? Can't they just make it 2X daily with A319s and avoid the pain (at least during high season) ?

Yup, I agree with Marie. MX A320's go almost everywhere in the US and sometimes Canada, I don't see why CCS would be the exception. So i don't think it's an aircraft weight issue but a bad organization when putting this flight together.

I checked on Sabre and It seems that Mexicana operates 757's on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays so the 320's are only 3 days a week. Also there seems to be plenty of availability so I don't think oversells would be that frequent... but then again sometimes they oversell flights by a lot. As I understand it even after giving compensation to PAX airlines still make more money by having a full plane than having an undersold flight.

I would recomend people to book on the thur-sun to avoid any inconvenience. However I think the 757's overhead bin storage sucks in comparison to the 320's.

Worst case scenario I would volunteer to get bumbed as long as they guaranteed first class for the next day even if you didn't get any compensation.

That's what I was thinking! Mexicana being a private company wouldn't miss on out on the opportunity to fly two flights per day if it were that the flights are selling out 100% unless there is also a shortage of aircraft, which might also be true. In any case, if the flights are selling out at 100% why hasn't a Venezuelan airline decided to fly the route yet?

Back in 2005 we used to get 7X 757s until early 2006.

Flights are very full, MX has pax by "the balls" by offering the nonstop to MEX and plenty of domestic connections without any VISA hassles.

Why isn't a Venezuelan airline flying to MEX? It's simple: Shortage of Aircraft.

VH's largest plane is a MD80 which obviously can't make it nonstop MEX-CCS.

Santa Barbara is concentrating in MIA, UIO, GYE and MAD and can't seem to expand their routes.

Conviasa will start flying to MEX as soon as Lopez Obrador (AMLO) overthrows Felipe Calderon. Mr Chavez said today that his govt. doesn't recognize Calderon as the new Mexican President and claimed the elections were fraudulent.

Guess where many of the ex-PDVSA employees went after they were fired by Chavez and blacklisted so that they couldn't find a job anywhere else in Venezuelan territory?

You have to consider that in July/August...Temperatures in MEX is cool, to Mexican standards all day long...At 7pm, below or around 70F(21C) routinely (I was in Mexico this august...). I saw a bunch of Mexicana Airbus taking off all day long...You would find airports much more challenging that MEX worldwide (heat or altitude wise)...I don't get what you are saying.

I just flew MEX-SAT-MEX with a 40% Load Factor on the way to SAT and 30% LF on the return - both legs were A320... would have thought they will be flying the A318!!

I flew MTY-MEX last January in an A319 and there were only 15-20 pax. I was expecting a B1900D  silly  hehehe.

Are you saying that the A320 has a problem with high and hot? I think that it is just that they are trying to put to much weight on it..... (e.g. not enforcing very strictly the 20kg by passenger and to much freight)

Wow, now I know why MX is worried of going bankroupt and Volaris, Interjet and A Volar are enjoying the fatal destiny of the ones that have one of the highest CASM in the mexican industry. I realy don´t know if flight atendants look at the load factors and say "hey lets not strike, lets help our new boss make this thing profitable". But NO, lets better strike and ask for more money because AM already got it. Weird industry the one we have.

Nope, but MEX-CCS handles a lot of cargo, and a lot of baggage, just from MTY the pax are leaving with an average 100kg baggage.

Those days the problem was the rain, contaminated runway, so the plane can´t lift all the weight, MX375 has been restricted a lot, remember 2 weeks ago they where only able to take 135 passengers, to make it, also with the 757´s being used for the SJO route and HAV, there was no possibilitie to send it, but when the delayed baggage and cargo was more than 2 tons they put an extra section MEX-CCS departing 3pm with a 757 just to send all that.

Also with the rain, there are more restrictions with the runway you´re using, remember that 1 rwy at mex has been closed for a while for the T2 works, also that adds more restrictions.

It depends on the routes and aircraft availability!!! Sometimes the system only has 10 A318s vs. 16 A319s vs. 29 A320s...!!!

More over, its wiser to send an empty A320 to SAT and having it back ASAP @ MEX so you can flight it later with 130 pax to X city instead of getting an A318 back to MEX and leave 30 pax on ground.

Also has to do with some test flights before C, D or any check, MTY usually is the first to get them, also when the planes can only fly in the Mexican Republic -like when they´re new on the fleet and there are not all the permissions available-
