So, Was The Last TWA 727 The One That Was Hijacked

Everyone keeps saying that the last 727-200 to operate for TWA was the very one that was hijacked from Athens to Beirut and Algiers. Is this true? Was it done on purpose? It seems to coincidental to not have been. Boy, some airplanes sure do make history.

I would be interested in knowing this myself. I have only been on two TWA 727s, and one of them was N64339, the one that was hijacked! I flew on it from STL to TPA on 6/21/76.

I've just been looking at a series of photos of the hijacked TWA 727 (14 June - 1 July 1985), but the registration number is not readily visible in any of the pics.

In May 1984, Capt. John Testrake piloted a flight I was on from STL to ORD. It was a 727-200, but I don't recall the tail number.

I don't know whether it's relevant, but at this very moment they are showing a film on WGN Cable about a story very tightly based on TWA847 from Athen sto Rome to London being hijacked & flown first to Beirut etc.

WGN Cable started 8pm ends 10pm. It's got a 707 and the guy from all the Airport (Joe Patroni) films in it... George... whathisname.

Yes, they are one and the same (the Beirut plane and the 'last flight' plane). I took pictures to prove it, and it was confirmed by former pilots who were on the last flight (which was MSY to STL).

I think it was planned. N54339 was still in the fleet at the end, and it seemed the obvious choice to me.

The movie on WGN tonight was "The Delta Force" and "the Airport guy" is George Kennedy. Despite the movie being somewhat B-ish it does have an all star cast including a Pam Am Boeing 707-139. (N778PA)
This was the only picture of the plane I could find.

There was also a movie made about the TWA hijacking. "The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story" is one of the few made for TV movie that doesn't cheese out like most do.

I believe Capt.Testrake wrote a book about the ordeal as I recall. Sorry, cannot remember the exact name however. It did have a red dustcover it seems. I remember reading it about 88 or 89. Thought it was pretty good.. God Bless Capt. Testrake, He sure did one helluva job in that ordeal. All of them could have ended up dead.

If you can find the book, read it.

"Triumph over Terror on Flight 847" is the name of Capt. Testrakes' book. It has a lot of religious references in it, so you might find it at a Christian bookstore. ISBN is 0-8007-1527-6.

This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

One of the hostages, i think his name is Kurt Carlson, went on to write a book also. If you come across the book, it's a good read.

The last four reg numbers of the hijacked one is 4339. I'm looking at Flights of Terror by David Gero and there is a photo in it. Was there ever a TWA hijacked or blown up round about the Middle East in the mid 1980's but in October? I'm sure I remember watching something on the news at a LHR hotel on the way back from my holidays.

yes there was another TWA 727 that took a small bomb hit from one in a briefcase under a seat on a flt from Rome to Athens, I think. As I recall , several passengers were casualties.
