I noticed that Santa Rosa, California (STS) has only a few flights served by United Express EMB-120s to SFO and LAX. By looking at the demographics of the Sonoma/Napa valleys, it looks like it should have alot more business. I would think that America West Express could easily support 3 daily CRJ flights to Phoenix. Maybe Horizon could run some Dash 8s up to Portland, too. Does anyone know if there are any restrictions at STS that keeps it from getting more service? Also, didn't American Eagle use to have flights to SJC from Santa Rosa? Any info is appreciated.

That airport is so close to me (about 20 min, I live in Sonoma County as well), I remember several years ago American had Eagle service to SJC. I remember the ticket counter even. Now it's only UA Express to SFO and LAX. I've always thought about having more flights, and it's possible the ones you mentioned would work, but I just don't know.

Apparently I've heard that they are going to build a new airport or something close to the old one, longer runways and all that. I think if anything it should be built a bit further south, it's 5-10 minutes north of Santa Rosa itself in a small town called Windsor.

United Express also had flights for a short time to LAX with BAe146's.

Is it really worth it to fly from STS-SFO? It would be faster to drive! After waiting at the airport and doing all the other stuff...you could drive to SFO and save some money!

If it was during rush hour, I would rather fly than deal with the commute traffic on the GG Bridge and then cutting through SF to get to the airport.

I use to live in Santa Rosa, CA. I drove to SFO and flew out of there instead of taking UE to SFO or LAX. The bad thing about driving is that traffic down the 101 is really bad! It's about 60 miles, but can take as long as 2hrs 30min to drive down there.. especially during rush hour.

Watch SkyWest. . . with the United scope clause being changed we're going to see many, many CRJs on the way. They might be replacing those flights and possibly adding more (STS-PDX?) with the jet. You will, of course, have to book with United. I know that doesn't help if you're partial to Alaska, American, or America West.

I work out of Sonoma County Airport at an FBO called American Aviation. I as well as many of the folks I work with are surprised there is only 6-7 daily SkyWest Flight. Currently the runways and all of the taxi ways are being re-done, but we are not extending them. I hope we might have some Skywest CRJ service begin, but no firm plans have been made. The new terminal will begin to be constructed next summer. I have flown the EMB-120 flight to SFO twice. It takes around 10 minutes by air compared to nearly two hours by car. It is well woth the extra $40 dollars they charge you for that leg. If you are ever in Santa Rosa come on by to American Aviation(we are right next to the terminal).

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering since you work at STS, if you know how long are the runway(s)? Do you think it and the new terminal would be able to handle fully loaded CRJs to Phoenix?
