"World’s longest aircraft joins QA fleet
QATAR Airways has become the launch customer of Airbus A340-600 High Gross Weight (HGW) version of the world’s longest passenger jet. The 266-seat aircraft in a three-class configuration, which is capable of flying non-stop between Doha and the US east coast with a full load of passengers and cargo, was given a fireman’s salute welcome yesterday at Doha International Airport following a flight from Airbus’ headquarters in Toulouse."

Thank you for sharing info, just pity we will not see it here in PRG. Only one 346 was here (VS) for the purpose of James Bond movie shooting, which was discussed here before.

Finally the first A346HGW is delivered. If Airbus had been able to introduce the HGW version a few years earlier, I would have expected that this latest variant would have had more success.

Congratulations to Airbus and Qatar. It will be interesting to see how Qatar will be growing. They seem to have a very strong business case.

I agree with you Wings. But on the other hand Airbus would perhaps have been more hesitant to make the A350 Xtra wide? And the A350XWB is going to be one amazing machine.

Only 266 seats? Pax will have a lot of space.

Yep, the A346 will probably go down in history as a beautiful failure. Airbus should have launched in 1993, but they were probably to busy with the A380 etc. The livespan from first delivery in 2001 to the EIS of its successor in 2014 is somewhat to short.

Based on the news article, they mentioned "We look forward to seeing passengers experience our award-winning five star service and comfort on this wonderful aircraft, which will be used on a number of long-haul routes from Doha such as London Heathrow, Osaka and the US east coast."
On the F class product, "The new A340-600 features eight first class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration
Passengers flying in the premium cabin of the A340-600 (HGW) aircraft will have a dedicated onboard first class lounge allowing them to relax and eat in a special area. Epitomising luxury and innovation, the new first class lounge promises to be one of the best in the air when it takes to the skies this summer.
The lounge features a stand-up bar with drinks rack and spotlight mood lighting. It also features cream leather sofas that can seat up to six passengers. Lampshades are positioned on two teak wooden tables, while a special additional aspect is electronically-operated window shades.
The general ambience of the lounge is one of comfort and relaxation with Qatar Airways’ strong burgundy corporate colours very evident in the curtains, carpets and furniture.
"Our new first class lounge onboard our A340-600 aircraft reflects the importance we pay to our premium class passengers who are looking for that little more attention, privacy and comfort."

Has anyone besides Qatar and Emirates ordered the A346HGW? I know Emirates is trying to change their order to other Airbus models. Such a shame, I think the A346 is a great looking aircraft. But then I've always liked the A340's looks.

Does any one know when the rest of QR's fleet are going to be painted in the new color scheme?
They also mentioned that this aircraft is the first to debut with the new livery. But I think there is an A332 already painted in the new livery, right?
Currently three aircraft are painted in the new livery; A7-ACJ (332) and A7-AGA/B (346)
All new aircraft to be delivered will feature the new scheme, the others will be painted during major checks during maintenance. The fleet will be gradually painted.

Thanks Rob! It is obvious that the only difference between the old livery and the new one is the enlarged Maha and QATAR on the side. So, I assume that they are not going to waste a lot of money in removing the old scheme, just add more burgundy

I apologize if I am being picky, but it is actually called an Oryx.
I flew on QR in April 2004 from FRA to AUH via DOH and they were one of the best airlines I have ever flown. Beats out LH and the US Carriers by a long shot. I'm happy to see that they are now up there with Emirates and Etihad in terms of quality and modern fleet.
