Status Of Varig’s Frequent Flyer (Smiles) Program

Ladies and Gentlemen:

This is my first post to A-net. I did a search and did not find overlapping content, so...

In light of RG's recent reorganization/ consolidation (or sale, if you prefer) can anyone advise on:

1) Whether the program still exists? If so,

  • Are miles accrued flying with Star Alliance members still posted onto Smiles accounts?
  • Can Smiles miles currently be redeemed on other Star Alliance carriers?

2) If Smiles no longer exists, has it been sold, or might it be valuable, to another carrier?

(My ultimate question here is whether my miles and tier status is still of value. I hope that the questions above will evoke a richer discussion and appeal to a wider audience- both Smiles members and non-members alike- on this website.)

A. It depends.
B. It depends.

2) It still exists! And it belongs to the new Varig.

They don't give many details about the current restrictions, but it is clear that TAP has suspended every single agreement they had. On the website there is a big banner saying that the issuance of Smiles Tickets has been temporarily suspended for Adria, ANA, Austrian, LOT, Lufthansa, SAS, SAA, Spanair, Swiss, TAP and United. On the website you are recommended to call them, if you have any questions.
I got a Smiles ticket for October for a GIG-FRA and I'm very happy about it.
What I've heard is that these suspensions have to do with the fact that the new Varig still doesn't an operations license. It's being said that everything will come back to normality, when Varig receives its licence.

The Smiles program still exists. I actually received a promotion from them yesterday but as we all know it is not easy to use it with the limits of their routes at this time especially if you like me commute between the U.S. and Brasil. Domestically I understand that their flights are running pretty much on time if you do not need to fly to cities they at this time no longer service and internationally you will have to fly between Frankfurt and GRU in order to be able to use them.

Only AC and US Airways IIRC accept RG Smiles Tickets nowadays.

Thank you all for your replies.

Hopefully Varig will receive the requisite licenses from the Brazilian authorities in due course and full participation in Star Alliance will follow.  champagne

I've been a "Smiles" member for years. My entire family of 5 are "Smiles" members. The other day, my 4 year old gets an email from Varig. They ask him if he'd like to reinstate his miles or something like that...for a fee. None of the rest of us received any email. I deleted it. I just don't see RG in the air for long. No, can't base that on anything either.
