Yet another nail in the coffin of rumors that the 787 is 6 months behind schedule that the Boeing bashers love to keep alive!

Getting back to the article, sort of.

I just had to see a picture of the 747LCF freighter after the article quoted the pilot as saying ``It's not the prettiest plane in the world, but it is such an important part of the company's plan, I can get past its looks,''.

After a quick photo search on Airliners.net, I have to agree. It looks like a 747 wrapped in a hot dog bun. I suppose all that is important is getting the job done.

CFRP is considerably stiffer than aluminium, but how stiff can be varied depend on resin, layup, etc.

Aw, come on now! Your comment here is overly simplistic and disingenuous. You have to give the good folks at Boeing credit for this decision to farm out a portion of the manufacturing process to potential large customers of this aircraft. While Boeing could have completed the manufacturing process without outside help, doesn't the inclusion of countries who now have a vested interest in the success of this aircraft make good business sense?

Using Japan as an example, if Nagoya wasn't so involved in the manufacturing process, do you think Boeing could have booked so many (80 firm/ 70 options)
from ANA and JAL?

Does it really matter who is the largest? Airbus have been caught in this one-upmanship game for years and brought out models that the market didn't really desperately need, just to prove that "we have the longest / biggest".....see where it's got them....

Most likely.

Airbus had no competitor to the 787 when the two airlines placed their order, and they would have needed to wait two years for even the slightest details on the A350-XWB. Even today, Airbus has no competitor to the short-haul 787-3 which constitutes the bulk of the ANA and JAL orders.

Boeing has the aircraft they need Airbus doesn't.

You can put that spin on it if you'd like, but it really is Boeing doing the shipping (their ship, management subcontracted to Evergreen), not the ones doing the manufacturing.

And you can also make the argument that they have no direct competitor to the 787-8: the smallest A350XWB is bigger than the 787-8. That's why you see SQ taking 787, 777 and A350XWB.

Well, my guess is when 787 production goes online, that will only help Boeing delvieries. Wasn't Boeing talking about increasing 737 production at one point? The A320 is Airbus' wonder. Biggest mistake in Boeing history was underestimating that.

And biggest aircraft maker? Airbus ships more units, but correct me if I'm wrong, Boeing is very close, if not - already do ship a greater value of aircraft?

Perhaps this is why Boeing elected not to offer a double decker 747, they couldn't bear to look at it.
