OAK Loses Azteca

I noticed on the Oakland Airport website that Azteca is no longer listed. I would assume they discontinued service there, which doesn't surprise me. But, when did this happen? Why? No pax? Bad times? Lack of aircraft?

Yeah I flew on the last flight OAK-TIJ It was Flight #423 on 8/31/06. It left for TIJ with 46 people. 3 headed to TIJ and 43 heading to GDL. I don't know what happened why the service was terminated. One flight attendant said that they might resume seasonal service, but it now looks like they pulled out from OAK. Well maybe this will leave the door open for Aeromexico, Volaris or Avolar to enter here. Azteca didn't do a good job of advertising it planes. I have to admit the service on ZE was good. Too bad to see them go.

Funny. I can just see WN squeezing a couple of Vegas flights out of the int'l gate. Smile

When does the concourse open? I flew over OAK the other day (departing from SFO) and it looks almost done, at least from overhead a few thousand feet in the air. It'll add 5 gates, right?

OAK to Mexico: why doesn't AS add their usual SJD and PVR and be done with it.

Alaska has very bad service, if it's going to be Int'l travel to SJD and PVR lets atleast get an airline with some class like MX. MX used to do charter flights to SJD and PVR. I flew the weekly PVR flights, it went out packed w/ a 757. Alaska makes me nervous with all the safety incidents they have had lately.

No...I can't confirm it unless it's in the Oakland Airport website. Oakjam...your sources are probably more reliable. Anyway, I probably won't make another trip to OAK if/when Oasis starts flying there...or when I see my relatives again.

TIJ is rapidly becoming an important hub for connections and flights to the rest of Mexico. TIJ has no connections or flights to any cities in California, advertising with TV and radio make routes work.

Volaris has a cool operation out of TIJ with packed planes that look beautiful, and very good service to the rest of the Mexican Republic. I hope that means that Mexicana should upgrade their A320's with IFE for better service.

TIJ is going to be beating SAN to the puch with new nonstop 777 service with AM to Narita. Tijuana, is at about 1.5 million people.

Didnt Aero California operate LAX-TIJ with the DC-9-32 back in the late 1990's. I remember flying with them from LAX-ZLO.

Yes they did. However the service was not meant for people flying between LAX-TIJ but instead more as a stop in TIJ as part of its domestic network.

A little useless flying to TIJ from the LA area considering you can be past the border in about 2.5hrs by car.

The official Tijuana estimate is around 1.5 million people, but since I travel to Tijuana it seems a lot bigger. There is a large land mass, with new developments at the Eastern edge of the city, around Playas(Beaches) and to the South going to Rosarito.

Mountains at the Eastern edge, east of Villas del Sol are being carved out. Some larger growth is near El Florido too. Tijuana is turning into a bigger Mexican city than it already is. Now I have one question for someone that might know...Does TIJ have 24 plane parking slots, because gates I counted 12 when I was last there 3 weeks ago. Cause it says that TIJ can accommodate 24 planes? It must be 12 gates and 12 plane parking slots.

I don't know how old the satellite picture is but if you have google earth installed (free program at google) you can type in "TIJ, Mexico" and see TIJ. It looks like 12 gates and 6 parking slots serviced by bus. Perhaps they took out the private plane parking to get 6 more parking slots, or they are counting what looks like a cargo terminal to get the other 6 parking slots -- otherwise it looks like 18 slots to me.
