According to WSI and the National Weather Service, a tornado was nearly right on top of ORD at 1715 today. Apparently the storm became tornadic near Schaumburg and moved to Elk Grove Village. ORD is currently in a ground stop. Any word from Chicago area a.netters about the status by the airport?

As of 18:38 EDT traffic is experiencing Gate Hold and Taxi delays between 16 minutes and 30 minutes in length and increasing. Also, arrival traffic is experiencing airborne delays of 15 minutes or less. Due to WEATHER/WIND and WEATHER/TSTMS, there is a TMP in effect for traffic arriving ORD. Some arriving flights are being delayed an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes.

I am 80 miles away from ORD in Rockford and it is perfectly sunny here, so I'd expect diversions normally, but there is an airshow and the airport is shutdown because of the Air Force Thunderbirds are practicing. So diversions won't come here.
There are some really nasty storms though. Chicagoland is getting smashed. Tornado watches are active for pretty much the rest of the day.

Fortunately the storms have passed ORD for the most part. It should just clear up, but United's operations for the rest of the day are going to be horrible. Average departure delays are just 45 minutes, but arrival delays are 4hrs 40min.

A report from here on the ground... we had some really fierce storms, especially for September. Some parts of the city got more than 10 inches of rain, and there was tornadic activity in several areas, including the downtown Loop.
It's cleared up, but I don't even want to think what ORD and MDW must be like right now.

The weather was not fun tonight. I was in heavy traffic in the Buffalo Grove area on Rt 83 and I heard the tornado warning sirens going off, at first I thought it was a sound effect from a radio commercial. Looking around, I had no where to go if there was a tornado in the area. I've worked in the area for 4 years and that was the first time I heard them go off.

Carbondale is nowhere near the Chicago area, that is more near the St. Louis area. However, my dad lives near EVV, and he said that they also got some strong storms down there, so maybe Carbondale got some as well?

The automatic doors of T3 in front of Delta was being blown open with windy rain coming in. I have never seen anything like that before. It became so dark out there. I'm sure glad Iberia got out in time because you know weather and ORD. AA's board just started turing yellow with delays and cancellations.
Then I get home and there wasn't so much as a stain on the road!

I have never heard the sirens go off lol. I spoke with my high school band director while I was on the Kennedy heading home and thats when I found out about the sirens going off. That was pretty odd for September in Chicago in my young memory. I hope the doors in T3 didnt break since the winds were just blowing them open like nothing. I wonder what ORD looked like from up above then? Very dark with storm clouds and all the lights from the runways, Terminals, and Aircraft still on the Tarmac!
