Schipol Spotting

I'm travelling over to AMS in November with some friends for a long weekend but I was planning to spend a couple of days at the airport as I've heard that there is a good terrace at the terminal for spotting.

I've been on the Schipol website and this states that the terrace shuts at 5pm during Winter. Does anyone know if this is just the restaurant or does the viewing terrace shut at 5pm as well?

Also, can anyone recommend any decent hotels at the airport that I can stay in before joining my friends in Amsterdam.

Jamie.

Hello,
i am sorry i dont know anything about the terrace, but i do know about a great hotel.
It is Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Its a bit pricey but its so worth it.You can acess the hotel by a cowered walkway from the airport. Those few times i stayed there i got a deal for 129 Euros, including breakfast buffet.
Hope you enjoy your stay

As far as I'm aware, the terrace shuts at 5pm but the restaurant is open later than that.

For other spotting locations and general info, take a look at the following link:

http://www.schipholview.nl/

A very good site with pretty much everything you need to know about AMS.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Titch

I use 2 hotels when I'm at at AMS (although not at the same time!) - the Bastion (there's two, one at the Kaagbaan end and one over the other side) and the Ibis/Etap. They're reasonably cheap and pretty handy for the good spots. They're also bookable on the internet.

As for the terrace in winter, i believe that in really bad weather it closes completely. Apparently it can be a bit hit-and-miss. It's also only useful (for photography) in the afternoons.

The terrace does indeed shut down at 1700 in the winter. I actually like the deck over at ZRH as well. If you have a chance to make to CH.

Terrace (what's left of it, about a third is closed for maintenance and a good chunk was removed last year or so permanently) closes at 1700 or sundown, whichever comes earlier, in winter.
The restaurants remain open, though I think not 24/7 (never looked).

The Hilton is conveniently located, but indeed pricy.
Dorint/Sofitel is good as well, located at the other end of the airport and has a free shuttle bus to the terminal.
Bit further away, Radisson/SAS is also very good and also has a free shuttle (as do many other airports, including some in the city).

Have you been back recently? I am assuming you are talking about the "chunk" in front of dakota's bar. You do realise that this section has reopened and that a "small chunk" has been added to it as well.

Currently a large section of the terrace has been closed for construction. The section overlooking the E/F apron. I do not know when it will re-open. If it takes as long as the section in front of dakota's bar, it will be a while.

nope, restaurant closes for sales at 21:00 and customers are asked to leave at 21:30.

Does anyone know when it switches from summer to wintertimes? I want to make some nightshots from the deck.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing! Checked Schiphol.nl (you might have heard of it, it is the 2nd most popular site after schipholspotter.com  ), the terrace will keep the summer schedule till the last sunday in october. Not sure if that includes the last sunday, but saturday october 28th is the last definate open day!

That day the sun will go down at 18:20. Check this site for the times that the sun sets/rises in NL. http://home.hccnet.nl/v.d.horn/weers...ting/zonsopkomst_zonsondergang.htm

Thanks everyone for this. I land at lunchtime on the Saturday so should get a few hours in at the Terrace.

May treat myself to a stay at the Hilton.

Cheers,
Jamie.

It is still free of charge. Turnstiles have been installed half a year ago with the intention of introducing a charge, but those plans have been put on hold indefinately.
