Good question... this practice dates back to the Comair strike of several years ago. DL decided not to carry all its eggs in one basket, so to speak. Thus, it became more commonplace to see more than one DL connection carrier on a given route.
The practice actually decreases the flexibility of the schedule since it became more difficult to "borrow" an aircraft to replace one disabled for mechanical reasons etc.
