since a few months, Nortwest flies to Frankfurt with a DC10. Great!
Anybody knows, if the Detroit-Frankfurt-flight is well booked?
I think it is not easy to make money with this flight.(Who wants to fly to Detroit???), but why not.
I do not hope NWA will pull out of Germany again.

And you know what? Detroit is one of NWA's megahubs (beside Minneapolis/St.Paul), offering connections throughout all the US and Canada.
And DTW was quite nice to transfer.
They make money, and they will remain in FRA. And flying the DC-10 is still a pleasure!!!

My DC-10s were 27 and 19 (DC-10-30) and again 27 (DC-10-40) years old. And you know what? No delay, high comfort, absolute safety. Stop bashing the flying legend, it doesn not deserve it!
Right, NWA attracts many passengers for flying the DC-10. Including me!

Okay, the D10 is not the problem, it's Northwest and that awful hub at Detroit Metro. I grew up in Detroit, and can fondly remember when DTW was a fairly sleepy place. I can recall my first 747 trip from DTW to MIA on Delta 12/70. Since Republic, and then NW, hubbed Metro, it has become worse every year.
It's not all NW's fault; the Wayne county airport commission is inept and corrupt - a double whammy. Things can only get better. At least Detroiters can take the Lufthansa A340 to FRA every night.

According to an 1995 issue of the Frankfurt Airport paper "Treffpunkt Airport", NW has been operating flights to FRA since 1984. I'm not sure wether they used DC10s all the time but I can remember seeing them for at least 6 years.

MD11 asked why anyone would fly to DTW. Well there are many reasons but let me give you just three for now
Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, General Motors.
Those who have flown on this route will tell you that it is constantly full. In Business Class I particularly appreciated the beer served out of a keg placed on a cart and rolled down the aisle. Frosted mugs too...
And for the DC-10 lovers... you would have appreciated the speed as we overtook an AA 777 at cruise altitude.

To whomever inquired, the DTW-FRA flight was started at least 10 years ago, but was operated with a 747-200 until about three or four years ago when they switched it to a DC-10. The flight, NW52/53 originates and terminates at SFO. Fight 52 uses a 757 for the the SFO-DTW leg, and flight 53 uses an Airbus A320 for the DTW-SFO leg.

Again, to reemphasize, Detroit Metro opens a new terminal for Northwest and its partners in July of 2001. So, only nine more months to deal with the current terminal before we get to enjoy the open spaces, walkways, and people movers of the new Midfield Terminal.

Actually, Midfield Terminal opens in December of 2001, not July. The baggage system will be functional by the Summer of 2001. (Don't want any delays like DIA's White Elephant!)
As for the Dc10, it's a great airplane. Quite a few airlines still fly them, AA and UA among them. They only use them for domestic flights, but ORD-HNL flown by UA and AA is by far a longer than flight than DTW-FRA!

The DTW-FRA route has been around for a while. The flight is almost always full because of all the NW connecting traffic in DTW. if you are coming from the midwest DTW is actually not a bad stop on the way to Europe.
