Sorry to return to the topic just minutes later, but I forgot to ask:

Are upper deck doors on the newer 747s (-300/-400) ever used for regular passenger boarding/disembarking or are they strictly used for emergency operations.

And secondly, how do these doors open?

The upper deck doors on 747-300s and -400s are used for emergencies only during regular operations, but can be used for maintenance purposes. They open upwards, swinging out away from the fuselage, rather than to the side.

They are hinged upwards, like the gull wing doors on a 1950-s Mercedes 300SL. They are usually used for emergencies, however I remember reading somewhere if a 747-300/400 is configured for very high density seating (SR perhaps?) and the internal stair case is removed I guess they would have no other choice but to board thru those doors?

747-451, there are no jetways that can reach up to the 747 upper deck, so boarding/disembarking via the upper deck doors would be impossible. However, there are escape slides that deploy from those doors in an emergency. I am certain there are no 747s without the internal staircase; how would the pilots reach the cockpit?
