When I went through DFW yesterday it looked like they were constructing at least one new runway, and possibly a new taxiway. Anyone know the story there?

Where were you coming from to go to DFW? Downtown? North Dallas? Ft. Worth?
I suspect you may have seen construction of the new perimeter taxiways on the south ends of 17C/17R and 18L/18C, the SE and SW sides, respectively, of DFW. I knew they were coming, but didn't know that they had started on them yet, if that's what they were.
There is another runway planned for the far west side of DFW (it'll be 18R, with the current 18R becoming 18C), but I was under the impression that was on the backburner due to post-9/11 traffic declines and opposition from Grapevine, the suburb underneath the extended centerline on the north side of the airport.

Quoting Contrails (Reply 4): I was on a plane taxiing for takeoff. I thought the work was farther north than what you mentioned, but again, it happened pretty quickly.
There are perimeter taxiways planned for the north side (around the ends of 35L/35C and 36C/36R) as well, and maybe it was those you saw. Didn't know which ones they were going to start on first, north side or south side.

DFW is doing a lot of reconstruction of the existing taxiway 'K' right in front of Terminals A,C and E. That is most likely what you saw. There is no new construction going on now.

They are getting ready to build the perimeter taxiway around the southeast side of the airport. After you land either on 17C or 17L you would go around 17R on the south end and come back up on Twy K. They are redoing Twy K right now and that is almost complete. There are no plans right now to start the new 18R project.

I flew out Monday morning from Terminal A at 6:00am to ORD. There is construction going on in the area adjacent to the terminal ramp. It looks like the trucks were entering the construction area between terminals A and C. I could not see what they were constructing since it was still dark.
Anybody know what they are building let us know.
"Any airline that wants to serve the [region] can go to DFW today and fly anywhere they want," WN spokesman Ed Stewart

That is the Twy K project, TWY K runs N to S next to Term A, C, E. They are doing full depth replacement on TWY K. When they are complete TWY K will be new from TWY B north to TWY Z.

The SE perimeter project just started on 9/15. It will only cover the area south of 17R/35L, 17C/35C, extend Twys L, M, and P some 2000' to the south. The runways will not be extended. The SW, NE and NW quadrents will begin in later years. This SE portion construction is planned for 20 months, and will eliminate Carbon Rd. Also part of this project will be one east bound high speed exit, Twy P4, from 17C to the intersection of Twy P and EL.

That is true. The Twy K reconstruction project is scheduled for completion in January 2007.
In addition to the planned new west side runway (18R/36L), which will cross the current 13R/31L and the additional 3 perimeter taxiway systems, there is another runway extension planned. The current Rwy 18L/36R is 13,401' X 200', and a new additional 2,009' extension on the south end, bringing the new lenght to 15,410' X200'. That is currently scheduled to start in late 2008 and is needed for international cargo traffic. The SW perimeter taxiway system is in redesign because of this extension, and will probibly be combined into one project, instead of the current two.
The new 18R/36L (and the required taxiways, as said the current 18R/36L will be redisgnated as 18C/36C) will be built, and will require Twy C to be extended to the north and around the UPS Cargo Ramp, It will also require two new taxiway bridges, bring DFW's total taxiway bridges to 10.
There is also several pavement rehab projects and lighting rehab projects currently going on. A new taxiway bridge rehab project will repair the current Twy B Bridge over International Parkway. That will also start in 2007.

On any given night/day we have anywhere from 4-6 closures for pavement rehab, lighting rehab and ARFF rd. rehab.

K is almost done. It'll probably be done before you get back buddy. I think only 3 more phases.

Thats the phase from Z-AEP14. They've been hauling the rubble out and should be paving soon.
So to summerize. No new taxiways yet, no new runways.... for now. Just a lot of REHAB. Thats what happens when an airport has been around for 30 yrs.

Well, that is close. As I said, the SE perimeter taxiway project has started, this includes the extensions of Twys L, M, and P, and adding the new HSE Twy P4 to the east side of 17C, and the new EV Twy.
