I had a ramp tour at FLL in December 2000 and was escorted by a chap from the public relations office named Jim Reynolds. I got some great photos and learned a lot about the airport's operations so I wrote a magazine article on my return home.
So Mr. Reynolds told me, the airport was to undergo a huge expansion program, which had already started with the construction of the brand new Terminal 1, which was due to open shortly after my visit. A new parking garage had also been built, to which several extensions would be added over time. The right-of-way for a people mover had been preserved, which would connect passengers to the airport from Port Everglades, and a new cargo terminal was also planned. The shorter of the two parallel runways would also be lengthened, so that the airport could sustain operations on two identical runways, as opposed to just the one (the cross runway had/has very limited use, apparently).
Since I wrote the article, I have no idea how many of the propositions have come to fruition, but I would be interested to find out. I do know for sure that Terminal 1 opened successfully and the parking garage has been extended, but I'm guessing by your words that the runway extension never happened?

FLLspoter...I do not have the best of news for you....I lived in the FLL area during the 80's and early 90's...Every six months, a major push to extend 9R/27L would hit the headlines. The result was always the same..The environmentalist and local residents would overpower everyone and the extension would get shot down. This has probably happened many more times, since I left the area. I remember around 1990, they had to resurface 9L/27R and the airport was really taxed. All operations operated from the 6900 foot 13/31. During this period, many Canadian charter airlines were operating DC-8's and 747's and watching them operate from this runway was very exciting along with the domestic L1011's.
FLL is busier than ever and really needs this extension..

Very well put. Many of those Canadian charters now operate 752s which are a beautiful thing to see achieving rotation along with the DL and AA 752s operating into FLL. It is quite clear that FLL along with PBI are important airports to South Florida since many in Broward and Palm Beach counties don't want to drive clear down to MIA. If 9R/27L is to be extended, it might do everyone good if a hurricane came through and took out the homes of some of the many NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard), who are fighting every move by Broward County to upgrade FLL.

Although slowed for a while, the Environmental work for the runway is underway again. Expect a public hearing sometime early in 2007

FLLspotter...I am out of FLL way too long now to know what is happening there anymore, but NWA 747's? These are long gone from the Florida routes. They routinely operated to MCO, TPA and MIA, but I do not recall them doing FLL. NWA was never that big at FLL although the DC-10's use to pop into FLL during the winter months, but those days are long gone...

NW operated daily MIA-AMS with a DC10. They did operate a few charters into FLL with the B747 within the last few years, but thats about it. Its still
a lovely sight to see a big widebody grace the FLL field, doesn't happen
much anymore.

Runway 9R/27L has recently been resurfaced and I've seen bizjets use it, as well as the occasional Delta ERJ. Nothing any bigger though. I've only seen the ERJ land on it, however.

For anyone who wanted to see new updates.
There has been a updated Terminal Layout Plan posted on the FLL website. It covers the next 10-15 years and shows 5 possible layouts to take FLL from it's current 57 gates to 79 and later up to 90+ in the far future.

To answer someone question. Yes DL does fly B767 into/out of FLL to ATL. I have flown on them in the past 3 years. I have to agree, they are getting real busy at that airport and they need to do something. In the Delta terminal they need to add some more food courts. What they have is not very good.
