After reading this trip report Finnair MD-11 New Business Class BKK-SIN-BKK (by Lufthansa747 Sep 14 2006 in Trip Reports) and doing a search for flights on this route I never knew so many different airlines served this route. Foreign Airlines which serve this route include AY, LX, BG, CX, GA (even though they are asian) and then you have the local carriers TG, SQ and JQ Asia.
I Also did a search for flights from BKK to HKG and this route has even more International airlines including GF, EK, AY, KQ, ET and then you have the following Asian Airlines AI, CI and UL and the 2 local airlines CX and TG.
My question is what other airlines have routes like these in Asia for example LH has FRA-BKK-CGK and LX ZRH-BKK-SIN.
Any info would be appreciated  Smile

AY will begin BKK-KUL-BKK next May after ending BKK-HKG-BKK to make HKG a non-stop destination from HEL all year round. Unlike the daily flight in summer 2006, this decision will make BKK-SIN-BKK 4 per week and BKK-KUL-BKK 3 per week in summer 2007.

All of these flights will be on MD-11s.

It seems that BKK is the big winner here. All those airlines making a stop at BKK must really leave a lot of $$.

Why Is BKK so popular for foreign airlines making a stop there? Is Thailand more flexible giving 5th freedom right than any other countries saying for example Singapore?

My guess:

- Cheap layover hotels (crews usually do BKK-XXX-BKK and don't stay at final destination)
- Don Muang had cheap landing fees compared to SIN/HKG
- Inexpensive catering
- Low salaries for ground staff
