Air Europa announced two months ago that they will begin operations from MAD to GIG effective November 06 using their brand new A330-200.
Even before the flight begins, UX announced that many flights are overbooked and they requested additional frequencies to ANAC to take care of the strong demand.
They received 2 additional frequencies and will run 4x weekly GIG-MAD effective December 2nd, and will be year-round.
Nice news for Brazil as Varig use to offer 49 weekly flights to Europe (nowadays only 7), and other airlines just offer less than 14 additional flights for the Brazilian summer.

Quoting Argentina (Reply 1): Are these flights GIG-MAD the only ones UX will be offering between Brazil and Spain, or some other destinations will be on schedules?
Hi Argentina !
In fact UX use to fly SSA-MAD 4x weekly since 2004 IIRC. During this summer they will add an additional frequency (will be 5x weekly). It turns UX the second player on Brazil-Spain market: Iberia leads with 17 weekly frequencies, Air Europa with 8, Air Madrid now with 5 (to become 7 on february), Pluna (MVD-GIG-MAD) with 3, BRA with 2 and Iberworld with 1. Varig has plans to return to MAD during 2007. MAD is nowadays the second best served Europe airport from Brazil, just after LIS.
Best Served European Airports to/from Brazil
1- LIS............. 41
2- MAD........... 36
3- CDG........... 33
4- LHR............ 17
5- FRA............ 14

Quoting BHXDTW (Reply 3): Doesnt Spanair flly to Brazil ?
BHXDTW, they just code-share with Varig. Varig route is not operated nowadays.
Quoting Richardw (Reply 4): Just waiting for LON-GIG to happen.
So do I !!!!!
Quoting Neo (Reply 5): So, MAD will surpass LIS when NM and UX start their new services??
Sorry Neo, i was not so clear. It includes new UX flights (not the extra from SSA), i didn't include NM because no one confirmed to me they will keep all frequencies at FOR (including BCN-FOR). LIS also includes the 6th weekly NAT-LIS.
Quoting Neo (Reply 5): Rumors were that Virgin was going to fly this route.. but nothing yet.. I honestly think it's just a matter of time until someone starts this route...
TP operates 48 weekly flights (NAT upgraded to 6 weekly as of November/06):
= 11-GRU + 10-GIG + 7-SSA + 7-REC + 7-FOR + 6-NAT = 48 weekly flights. BRA also serves LIS 2 x week which makes total weekly flights 50. This is not include the various charter flights.

Should be 45 from LIS (including 2 BRA, while one is GRU-GIG-MAD-LIS and other GIG-GRU-LIS-MAD), you include 3 OPO-GIG and 3 OPO-GRU. BRA is also running a regular BPS-REC-LIS weekly service.

What are the current destinations of UX?? Are they still flying to PEK? What is their w/b fleet? didn't they have a A340? In their website, they list 3 B767, 3 A330 for their w/b... What's going on with that airline??

Quoting Neo (Reply 12): As this new flight won't continue to GIG, space for a non-stop flight is still available.
Virgin has no short term plans to commence such service!!They keep the rights, but lack the aircraft!!! In this case, I would expect BA to step ahead and launch non-stop GIG service before VS does... Even then, not likely to be this coming year!!!!

In fact BPS-REC-LIS but it's not regular, you're right, 44 LIS flights.

The 3x additional frequencies are seasonal and authorized by ANAC because RG is not flying and JJ service will begin only on the end of october. The frequencies are owned by Virgin.

What does it mean Virgin owns these frequencies? Did ANAC grant them these rights? Anf if so how come BA got to use this frequencies, if they are owned by Virgin?

ANAC grant the frequencies to Virgin. BA just take advantage as Virgin does not run the route yet, and obtain additional frequencies (but not allocation) for this summer. You can try to find out the BA night flight on may/june.. it's just for the high season and because TAM will offer about 30% less seats than Varig (281 to 213).
For sure if VS take more time to begin it's service, we can see BA trying to get such frequencies.
