Why is the 763 flying this route, and why is it coded that way?

Given the route it flew, it's most likely a charter. AFAIK, any DL flight number that starts with a 9 is a charter or a ferry flight.

What is the departure time and is it a non-stop flight to ATL? I ask because the University of Hawaii football team has a home game against San Jose St. on that night. Many times, the visiting team will leave soon after the game in order to get home and have all of Sunday to recover. I don't recall if SJSU charters flights for games in Hawaii, but it could fit if the flight stops in SJC on the way to ATL.

It can't be a charter, because it's a bookable flight - I'm actually flying in BusinessElite from HNL-ATL on it. BE on a HNL route. Who'da thunk it?

Ha763, it's a direct flight.

DL often uses non-traditional flight numbers at the beginning or end of the month and at DST time changes.

uhhh..i worked for Delta for 15 years. i never heard of 9000 series flight numbers operated for the reason you indicate. only ferry flights and extra sections.

Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

SJSU football does not fly Delta. I believe they fly with Frontier.

I see it happen all the time! Examples:

When DL decided to go CVG-CDG on the 777, there was a scheduled and publically bookable 9xxx flight ATL-CVG when the route commenced, and when it seased on the 777 going CVG-ATL in 2003 (?) when the 777 was seasonal for CVG's route.

When DL did charters for NBC to the Olympics in ATH, the 'dead head' routes of the aircraft were sold this way also. Example, when the two 777 left JFK for ATH (supplemental to the daily 763) to pick up the NBC crew in ATH; these routes were available for sale. Same from ATL-JFK for these op's also IIRC.

In 2004 here in GRR we had a dandy of a snowstorm over Thanksgiving. DL's lone mainline flight CVG-GRR was on approach to GRR and was not able to land, and returned to CVG. The mainline ATL-GRR flight that operated at the time was cancelled before leaving ATL. The Comair flights were cancelled as well. DL did us all a favor and ran a special op 9xxx flight on Thanksgiving morning one going CVG-GRR-CVG-GRR-CVG and one going ATL-GRR-ATL. The ATL-GRR-ATL flight was on a 738, and I believe that is the only time a DL 738 has been in GRR.

These are the ones just off the top of my head  Smile

Then you should look at the PDF timetables your carrier puts out  Wink . It has become quite a regular sight to see 9XXX flights in the timetables on the first day of a month, and yes, they were indeed bookable. Interestingly enough, I have only noticed this starting since DL entered CH11, whereas before that, it didn't appear to be the case.

As indicated it does happen. It is usually a flight reinstated for a day or two after a loaded schedule change. The reason the old number doesn't return is because it is now being used for another flight.

Just repositioning a charter flight. The aircraft will be arriving from OGG. A company is going to Maui for a few days.

Not to Hawaii. They are not ETOPS certified.

So, other than the BusinessElite seats, will there be BusinessElite service, or just the standard F class?

Just the seat will be different.

Which in itself would still be the main reason for booking this flight. Screw the food when you get way increased legroom over regular domestic First Big grin .
