Italy is very much Ryanair territory; indeed, it is the LCC market leader on Italy-intra-Europe flights with 18.63% market share*. Moreover, it presently serves 20 destinations in Italy (including those in Sicily and Sardinia); has 3 bases (CIA, PSA and BGY); and has a current total of 108 routes to and from the country (including announced routes), which is apparently more than AZ, the national carrier.
Here’s a list of the 20 airports it serves and its present routes (including announced routes):
TRS – 2; STN, HHN
TSF – 10; STN, BRE, HHN, CRL, BVA, LPL, DUB, SNN, GRO, CIA
VER – 2; BRE, HHN
VBS – 2; STN, GRO
BGY – 22; BTS, CRL, DUB, EIN, HHN, GRO, PIK, GRX, LBC, LPL, LTN, STN, NCL, TRF, BVA, CIA, SVQ, SNN, NYO, VLC, WRO, ZAZ
PMF – 1; STN
GOA – 2; STN, HHN
TRN – 3; STN, CRL, DUB
FRL – 4; STN, HHN, DUB, GRO
PSA – 21; AHO, BLL, BOH, BRE, CRL, DSA, DUB, EIN, HHN, FDH, GRO, PIK, LBC, FKB, LPL, STN, MLA, TFS, SVQ, TPS, VLC
PEG – 1; STN
AOI – 1; STN
PSR – 3; STN, GRO, HHN
CIA – 21; CRL, DUB, NRN, EIN, HHN, EMA, GRO, PIK, FKB, LPL, LTN, STN, MRS, BVA, BGY, SDR, SCQ, SNN, NYO, VLC, TSF
BRI – 2; STN, HHN
BDS – 1; STN
SUF – 1; STN
PMO – 1; STN
TPS – 3; STN, PSA, GRO
AHO – 6; STN, LPL, DUB, GRO, PSA
And this growth will, of course, continue; indeed, a report** states that there are up to 4 possible further FR bases in Italy. The same report believes that its three existing bases, at CIA, PSA and BGY, could eventually have up to 15, 5 and 15 based 738s respectively. In the case of CIA, that assumes the noise regulation issue can be sorted.
What about routes that have previously existed? I would like a complete list if possible. I know CIA-KLU and STN-RMI (incidentally, U2 have since begun LTN-RMI). CIA-AHO also, I believe.
Which destinations in Italy used to be served but are no longer? RMI, CTA? What about CAG? I would like a complete list if possible.
What about further possible destinations? The most obvious, perhaps, is NAP. It is conspicuously absent. Hopefully it’ll one day be served. And, I suppose, RMI and CTA might once again be served. I am uncertain about other destinations in Sardinia, but who knows – CAG (in the southern right corner, compared to AHO in the top-left) might make an appearance.
It'll be interesting to see how VRN and VBS and PMO and TPS work out.
