Likelihood Of Getting On Earlier Flight

I'm curious and couldn't find answers searching the forum.

I've booked NW 876 - 7 pm (now fully booked) Oct 5th, MSP-SDF, if I show up early, would it be possible for the agents to put me on earlier flight, such as NW 874 - 3 pm (still plenty of seats left).

Technically I can change my reservation online but it'll cost $100, yuk! I would think the airlines would be anxious to put me on earlier flight to leave an extra seat for standby for this evening flight?

Any ideas? Suggestions? I'm thinking of just going there early in the morning and see if they can put me through earlier flight(s).

You will be charged at the gate/counter to change your flight. Maybe there will be some exception since your booked flight is sold out, but I doubt it. You will have to pay for the change.

I would try a old-school really early check in and not use a kiosk if possible, so that you have to check in and an agent has to dig through your reservation and see - wow, dude you're so early, let me hook you up -

Try that.

Just be really nice, sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. Depends on what kind of day the checkin agent is having...  Wink

I've done that before with AA, flight scheduled late pm, showing up at 5 am and the agent just said, "now it's up to you Mr Yang, but if you want to leave early I'll just put you on next flight at 6 am".

I haven't ruled out paying a fee for changing the flight, but I'll wait til the Thur when I get to the airport since my booked flight is full (overbooked in fact).
