I have just arranged the cheapest return airfare I have had for years SYD-AKL-SYD (still with class & service).

$235 AUD each way........ and a proper meal and service! I don't know how they do it, but I'm really glad of it. Sure - its Economy, but worth it on a near new 340-500, or a 773 and Ice PFE.

I was surprised that being the school hols here and in NZ, that the prices might have been higher for this time of the year ?

Congratulations, looks like a great deal. Just had the pleasure to fly DXB-SYD on the A345 and ICE kept me busy all the time. You'll be disappointed when your flight already ends after a few hours.

Carrying some additional pax and cargo is probably less expensive in the end than parking the aircraft for many hours at BNE, MEL and SYD.

I have travelled Emirates back and forth to NZ for the last 5 years - since QF and ANZ downgraded the Tasman hop to their version of a "domestic" flight. The day they improve- I might support them again - or buy a row boat!

I know that EK are doing this to bolster their reputation down under, but while I can still take a 3hr 45 min trip- and still enjoy the relaxation of a nice meal/service/& comfort....... I will do it.

I have been chided in this forum 'coz I'm a Kiwi - living in Oz since 1987, but I have given up on QF and ANZ. Mainly when one adds up the HOURS it takes to do a Tasman hop - especially if its a business trip.

A three hour pre-check in time......... wasting time at the airport......... always departure delays leaving SYD... bla bla bla bla (we've heard it all before).

If I have to give up virtually 8 1/2hrs of my working time to take a 3.45 min flight........ I want to at least believe that its been worth it! On Emirates I feel that way........... not on QF or ANZ, who in the last few years have turned away their loyal supporters (AND I MEAN LOYAL NATIONALS!!!!) - with their desire for the almighty $$$$$$$$.

While every year all the execs are reaping bigger and BIGGER bonus's - the traveller is enduring less and LESS service and attention.

EK can offer dirt cheap fares because the flight from DXB can cover the losses and the cargo flowen to/from NZ which usually always fills the cargo holds makes up for the cheap fares

So EK flys more between DXB/NZ/DXB than QF or ANZ would between Australia and/or New Zealand? That sounds a bit strange?

I'm talking about good old fashioned service - not cargo or freight. Qantas and Air New Zealand have forgotten that the biggest majority of their ex-pats live in either country............ and they have tossed them all into a comunal basket - IE "domestic".

Gone are the days of flying a "big" jet "overseas"........ now its a sardine can - no IFE - no food - pay for everything - slack service - and the cost of the flights are totally abhorrent considering you are flying "WORSE" than cattle class..........

That is NOT an overseas airliner trip thanks (Hamilton to Taupo maybe).

I think both QF and ANZ have to realise that there is a major contender in EK, and they are trying harder to impress all the time. They now have crew bases all over hte world and increasing.

If they keep up this service they are going to reap the benefits, and while QF and NZ skimp on the locals, only looking further afield, they will loose out even more than they are now.

New Zealand exporters send alot of exports and imports to/from DXB and EK provides the capicity due to their wide bodys which NZ and QF can't. Businesses have suffered due to their downgrade of aircrafts and when EK arrived, they jumped on EKs band wagon quickly.

You have to remember that before EK arrived on the scene there were at least 10 other carriers also flying the tasman wanting our $$$ and NZ and QF couldn't compete so dropped their fares, downgraded the meal service and downgraded aircraft to offer cheaper fares and to increase frequencys. I personally find the meal service on NZs Tasman services to be good. I don't need a huge meal (EKs standards) on a short 3 hour flight. NZs meals fill me up well.

Well, one doesn't need to eat all of it and can return to ICE instead...  Wink
