Airbus Tops Airfinance Poll For Third Year Running

Investors and operators polled by Airfinance Journal have awarded Airbus Industrie top marks for the third consecutive year, with a combined score rating it first aircraft manufacturer overall.  

“Airbus Wins on Points,” titled Airfinance Journal, showing Airbus as:
- Number One in the overall manufacturer survey,
- Number One rated narrowbody aircraft by investors, with the A320,
- Number One rated narrowbody aircraft by operators, with the A320
and awarding it six of the top ten positions in the operators’ poll overall.

Airbus came first in the poll’s narrowbody category, with both investors and operators preferring the A320 over competing aircraft, and with Airbus’ in-service A320 Family taking the top three places in the operators’ poll. While all the members of Airbus’ single-aisle family were ranked among the top ten aircraft by operators, only a single competing aircraft made it into the same segment, in tenth place.    

“The poll reflects [Airbus’] creation of an attractive and efficient family of narrowbodies,” said Airfinance Journal, confirming the overwhelming market appeal of these aircraft. “The rest of its narrowbody family has caught up with the A320’s top ranking last year and it now has a stranglehold on the top three positions.” According to the journal, one US airline respondent even wrote: “A320 is a superior product to the 737. Better operating statistics, preferred by customers … When we evaluated it financially everyone said the A320.”  

The poll, published in the journal’s September 2000 edition, has investors and operators rank individual aircraft models on the basis of five criteria: value for money, operational success, investor appeal, residual value, and remarketability potential. Operators consistently rated Airbus’ A320 Family aircraft higher than competing aircraft types on remarketability potential and residual value. Even the A318, yet to enter service, scored remarkably well. “Interestingly, the A318 is nearly two points ahead of its rival … in terms of expected residual value performance,” stated the journal.  

Indeed, the survey, which also measures performance expectations of future aircraft, showed a high degree of confidence in Airbus’ development programmes, with the A318 well ahead of competing airliners in the operators’ poll, and the A3XX entering the ranks for the first time in seventh position. No potential competitor of the A3XX was listed in this category.  

“Its widebodies, too, are being rated better year after year,” said Airfinance Journal. In the widebody category of the operators’ poll, the A340-500 jumped from eighteenth position last year to joint second – the biggest move of any aircraft - while the A340-600 leapt eleven places to take the fourth position. The A330-200 was rated second by investors and came equal fifth in the operators’ poll, receiving the highest score given for operational success – well ahead of its closest competitors.  

“Airbus’ scores were more stable [than Boeing’s], a strong contributing factor to its good results,” said Airfinance Journal. “Airbus will be delighted with its continuing erosion of Boeing’s market position.”

I'm always interested in seeing articles like this. How does one interpret this when many other industry rags constantly state the "higher residual" values of Boeings??? Anybody work for a leasing company care to explain this???
