Ok so Fed-EX recently decided that they wish to acquire 90 757s for their fleet. With the current popularity of the 757, I find it interesting, as they are probably going to have to pay a premium for these frames. I wonder if they have considered the idea of purchasing 90 Tu-204s. With the RB-211 and western avionics they LOOK like a reasonable alternative. Of course I have no idea if the thing is even certified for use in the US, so that might be a problem. It just seems like they could get a smokin' deal if they bought 90. And it looks like TNT is pretty happy with theirs as well. Anyone else?

As good of an idea as that might seem, the spare parts market would be rather tough to deal with. If no one else flies them, and you've got a disabled plane sitting on the ground, hoping to get a part quick from Tupolev could be costly.

Good point. I had assumed A.Net required all CivAv. threads to at least mention the A380, or at the very least if you want a lively discussion it's best to mention it - so this was a wise move.  Smile

The Tu-204-120C or -220C w/ RB-211's is very similar to B757, and has the advantages of being available as a new-build, and purpose-built as a freighter rather than a conversion. What I don't know is how much they cost...anybody have some numbers?

As for spares for the aircraft....
RB-211 engines - no problem here
Western Avionics - ditto
Other systems....
I don't know alot about fed-ex but I have to think that part of the deal would be the setup a good parts stream. I just keep thinking that 90 frames is a pretty signifigant number, and Tupolev would probably bend over backwards to help. Especially as this would be a huge step for them, and a real introduction in the west.

FedEx is a USA based company, they do USA government contracts, they have a marketing and service contract with the USA Postal Service, they don't want any problems with parts or mx with any aircraft. So I doubt they would consider any aircraft from Russia for those and other reasons.

An interesting idea...but I think they'll get the 757 like they wanted. I'm thinkin the 757 line may end up a lot like the 727 line...lotsa leftovers for the cargo carries to pick up once all is said and done. It's just a question of when.

You know I kind of thought that too. I mean the last thing I want companies to know is that I need something they have. On the other hand, suppose you own an airline that is using 757, not because you want to, but because you can't afford to replace them. Knowing you have an eager buyer around would make it pretty easy to go to your board. Still all in all it still seems like a good way to drive the price up.

See the problem here, is that when the 727 was coming of and being parked, There were several options for direct replacement. Including the defacto Boeing replacement, the 757. The problem here is that, No One is actually building or marketing a true direct replacement model. The companies that are using the 757 really like them, and are making good money with them, or they would already be languishing in the desert waiting for the freight cos to scoop them up. I think FX is gonna end up paying a pretty penny for 757s, but hey we'll see.

I think he meant the ATRs (which are partly made in Italy BTW).

I think reply 12 is probably correct in why FedEx would make a public announcement. Indeed there are carriers operating B757, and some are doing so because it exactly meets a need that they have and there is no direct replacement.

Airbus and Boeing either offer more or less aircraft, making a business case to your board for either less market coverage or increased market share looks much better on paper if you have a guarenteed buyer of your existing a/c, additionally, FedEx to ensure that they don't pay a premium would probably sign a deal to purchase after you obtain your new a/c, thus no need for interim lift a/c.

If this thread intent works, lets see it repeated in a A or B thread without mentioning the other.

The E in eads is for european and there are several countries that participate in building this and other airbus birds.. I have heard that the Germans and French hold equal shares....In other words they are equal in stature and equally contribute to the engineering of these birds....


But the weird thing is that when someone makes a mistake and calls it a French Company (Or at least French led-which is just a hop or a skip from being French) many nice German A.net members quickly launch into the trench (sorry lots of history there) and fray and not so subtley correct the transgrerssion (and rightly so mind you) and let us know that it is not a French company, but rather a european company.


Although , I've yet to see any of our dear French A.net members join in and defend the multinationality of the company. Could it be that they they feel the German members are doing a fine job of this? Or is the multi - owner/nationality clearly evident and they feel that it is below them to respond to this?

Rats... I just read the thread of the title. Our educational system is not as good as , say the candian educational system, so I often struggle with reading and writing..

Ok. back on topic then. All 57s are not created equal. So waht is fedex looking for? Are there some out in the western USA that are waiting for a home , kind of like pupies, b/c they are not 200 or ER(are 57s built in this version) or becasue their engines came from pratt instead of RR-or b/c these are not etops birds? Who took over all the twa birds that AA got rid off (is getting rid..). What s fed ex looking for

I believe, (not sure, but I think....) that Delta will be taking the ex-TWA 757s. They have engine commonality, whereas AA/TWA's 757s were not the same.
