After recently having announced non-stop service from MIA and PBI to Chicago's Midway airport, airTran today announced new non-stops from MIA and PBI to Indianapolis:

FL is really building up both IND and MDW below the radar. So many people on this site criticize FL for not seizing opportunities, but I think FL is nicely set up for when one or more legacy carriers fail, by becoming smaller players in multiple major markets, rather than a major player at only one or two large markets. If NW goes down, FL can expand IND for example. They are setting themselves up perfectly.

Great news for the Midwesterners again! Another alternative to NW out of IND. This should be another good move for FL.
WHEN, oh WHEN will the westward expansion come though - out of MDW, BWI, etc?

OK, well that is actually quite good. I know that IND-FLL has quite a bit of O & D between the snowbirds, visitors, and cruise pax. NW does well on that route. FL also serves it nonstop. I think it's time to open up the connection to the other Platinum Coast cities.
Competition of the MIA route will come from MQ's ERJ. PBI has no non stops between the cities.
Just a quick check of fares on Orbitz for Thanksgiving Week (since it is a popular travel period) to MIA from IND gives fares of 898.00 on MQ. Very steep for domestic midwest service. PBI fares for same period is FL themselves (the cheapest) at 414.00 with a stop.
Reverse fare are cheaper (by about 100.00 for PBI, but about 300.00 from MIA) as it is off season from South FLorida.
I'm not worried for MIA, but will PBI be a problem. I need to dig up the numbers to see. Mark, you might have them off hand.

When did AA end the 737 service along the route?

the numbers are low (Faremeasure says 46) but at the same time, historically, Indianapolis has seen multiple nonstops into Ft. Lauderdale and zero into West Palm. what might have been going on...people were simply flying into Ft. Lauderdale and then commuting up to West Palm Beach. now, cutting down the number of frequencies into Ft. Lauderdale and just simply offering a nonstop into West Palm Beach might prove fruitful.

USAir served IND-PBI back in the day.

looking at FL's route map several other routes seem ripe for the pickin..
IND-CLT
IND-BOS
IND-LGA
IND-EWR
IND-IAD/DCA
Possible even IAD-BWI or PHL despite WN on the route

On the East Coast yes, but their West Coast service is dismal. They shold expand out this way. They don't have many major East Coast markets left to enter.

I'm surpirsed they hadn't gone after IND-PBI/MIA before. The new FL flights should drop those fares. I can only imagine havign to dish out 800 bucks to fly the route pre FL. Keep on expanding AirTran...

Yes, but most of these routes are in direct competition with at least one other airline. FL might pick them, but I doubt if they are ripe.

Hopefully they jump in on PHX and STL first. They should work on the west first, then Caribbean. So what do you think their STL and PHX schedules would look like if they announced them.

I disagree on this, a bit. The season for Caribbean travel is coming right up and around the corner. With all their flights from the midwest and the northeast, they could probably make a go at a destination or two, offering an "off bank time" departure.
Quoting JetBlueAtJFK (Reply 16): So what do you think their STL and PHX schedules would look like if they announced them.
I suspect they would announce Phoenix before St. Louis, just because Phoenix is more of a hole in their system than St. Louis. Both airports are served enough by their respective carriers, but Phoenix geographically makes for better connecting opportunities to the AirTran network, and there's probably enough of a local following to jump on board.
Phoenix -- 2 x daily 737
St. Louis -- 3 x daily 717

Do you mean possibly IND-IAD, BWI, or PHL. Because WN doesn't fly PHL-IND and i doubt they will fly IAD-IND anytime soon

AirTran definitely has C2 and C4 and they've been using C10 from time to time since April. C10, I believe is, for the most part, a common use gate, unless they've got their full artillerly of colors displayed on it as of now. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think all the gates in the "C" Concourse are common use, but the regularly scheduled airlines that use them get the priority on the gates. AirTran only has roughly 17 or 18 daily flights from Indianapolis, depending on their seasonal activities.
