Qantas 707-138B Returns To Australia In November

The former Boeing 707-138B that was in storage at Southend has been purchased by the Qantas Outback Founders Museum. It's scheduled to return to Australia in November.

It is the former VH-EBA, the first jet aircraft delivered by Boeing outside of the USA, Australia's first jet aircraft, Qantas' first jet aircraft... the plane which reduced flying time from 48 to 27 hours Sydney to London. It was originally delivered on 20 July 1959.

The Australian Government also chipped in with funds on this, because of the plane's historic nature.

I'm personally thrilled to pieces that this has actually happened! I've read that it's in the original 1959 livery (not the V-Jet one above / like John Travolta's) and that it's been painted...

So who's a spotter near Southend who can get the pic?

Yes, this is something I'm really looking forward to. This is the oldest airworthy (and perhaps the oldest really intact) 707 in existence, the first 707-100 short body, and apparently the first Ozzie jet.

The article doesn't mention something I read elsewhere. If this has not changed, the plane should fly this month to Seattle, where it will undergo a repaint in the old livery and further maintenance. I wonder if this is still the plan. Having it in OZ in November already would be good. The old bird deserves a good home.

That'll be a great sight to see ... they should open it up to us Sydneysiders to have a look too, but I'm not holding my breath for that. Looks like a road trip to outback Queensland is in order.

The tail was attached to the aircraft - it was removed for maintenance.

Sure - after Seattle, it will follow the original delivery route.

SFO-HNL-NAN-SYD, which was also one of the routes that the aircraft used to fly when it was in service.

I've heard that the aircraft is being repainted in Southend. However it is visiting Seattle (and presumably Boeing) before the flight to Sydney.

With all the damn profits that Qaintarse are making, you would think that the refurbishment of a 707, that they could use for promotions etc:, might be of use to them considering the bad publicity they are getting with all this "out-sourcing" they are doing at the moment.

If I was a shareholder, I'd be pissed about the expense of sending Qantas engineers to the UK to rebuild a plane to flying condition - only to fly it to Oz and then set it up as a static exhibit............. typical!~

Least they paid for John Travolta's paint job - after "he" had the plane rebuilt! Tight-asses!

Why is it a bit sad? The alternative would be the aircraft scrapped in the UK somewhere down the line. Would it have been better to cut the plane up and ship it in boxes to Australia?

As far as I am aware, everyone on the programme is a volunteer. A lot of the people are retired QF people. Have a look at the site at the top - it shows all the sponsors and the rest of it.

I don't know how technically feasible that would be. The length of the tail is not the only technical change that the plane underwent. All of Qantas' original turbojet 707-138s were converted to -138B standard, with the JT3C turbojets being turned into JT3D turbofans (I don't know if Qantas had any new engines, but I think the turbojets were directly converted to turbofans), and having the wings modified. This would be very difficult to do (note, for example, that the aircraft from which the 707 is derived, the Boeing Dash-80 test aircraft, is preserved in the Smithsonian annex with turbofan engines, a monopole antenna, and other modifications which it certainly did not have when it flew in 1954). Hardly any parts may still exist to do it.

I know, except it costs about as much as an Asian holiday just to fly there and back. (Domestic tourism in Oz is really f***ed unless the domestic airfares come down)

In that case I'd rather go on a spotting holiday in SIN, HKG, or any other Asian port rather than go see a preserved 707 and a 747, no matter what the heritage.

Having said that, when I grow a bit more geriatric, wouldn't mind going on the Spirit of the Outback train which goes from Brisbane to Longreach, certainly sounds like a unique experience on a train.

I will be in Queensland (Brisbane) in mid March 2007 for a short period and am literally planning a 'flying' visit to Longreach. This all hinges on the 707 being there by this time. Plan is to catch the daily QantasLink Dash 8 out there (2h 20m flight) stay overnight and return the following day so should be an interesting trip. For those who are unfamiliar with Australian geography Longreach and the Qantas Founders Outback Museum is located some 1200km north west of Brisbane so its not exactly close to a capital city!!

Additional Information:

Mcafferty's Coaches (Bus line, now Greyhound) do run a service to Longreach (from Brisbane) if you don't mind a 9 hour layover in Toowoomba. It could be a great experience if you have time on your hands. Unfortunatly because of other commitments I have to be back in Brisbane in 48 hours so I had to rule this otherwise interesting option out.

Thanks for the update. It's a pity you don't arrive at Longreach earlier in the morning and leave later in the day. That only leaves <5 hours to see everything!!!`

They were sent back to Pratt & Whitney for remanufacture / conversion, so they were the same engines.

Why paint it in V-Jet livery when John Travolta's aircraft already has that livery?

It makes much more sense to have it in the short lived 1959 livery, which is how it appeared when delivered. If you want to get technical, it also wore the 1959 livery when it was converted to -138B standards. It didn't get repainted until the aircraft was back in Sydney.

Also read it was due to have her "first" flight on Oct 27, and be in Australia soon after - around the time as QF's 86th birthday.

It's going to be in the 1959 livery - the original V-Jet livery (first pic in thread) only had the tail repainted.

Note VH-XBA has the following incorrect items on the livery -

* Cheatline wrapping around the cockpit windows. Incorrect.

* Should be polished metal underside

* Too many windows blanked out

* Carnation red used

* VH-EBA painted under the wing (presumably the top also has Qantas and VH-EBA painted on it)

* No outline painting of exits

It could still be the original c. 1959 delivery scheme apart from the tail it was very similar to the V Jet scheme although one of the differences was the the original scheme's cheatline wrapped around the cockpit the V Jet scheme stopped before the cockpit.

The aircraft is due to leave Southend for the start of the journey to Longreach on Sunday the 5th of November.

It is routing to Seattle first via Stansted and I believe Halifax (a field in Nova Scotia anyway) and then to Seattle where a photo shoot will take place with Travolta's beauty.

The aircraft is due into Sydney at 0800 on Thursday the 16th of November routing via Honolulu and Nadi. Later that day an official function will take place to welcome the aircraft back to Australia.

It is then due into Brisbane on the 21st to be present during the official opening of the QF 767 hangar in Brisbane.

She then departs Brisbane for Longreach on the 25/11. No specific times have been issued except for the arrival into Sydney.

For the southern state folks interested QF will be running a charter to Longreach for the arrival, as they did when they put the 747 into there, details should be available soon.
