What an awful day to be flying out of BUF. There's at least 2 aircraft tipped over on their tails (looks like a NW DC-9-5 and another smaller jet) and the airport currently has no power and most of Erie County is under a water restriction. Only one restaurant is/was open, serving only water and fruit to the 500+ people stuck in ticketing.

Current status:

Due to SNOW REMOVAL, the Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) was closed as of Oct 13 at 05:15 AM EDT. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is Oct 13 at 12:00 PM EDT.

I would go grab some pictures but the whole area is under a state of emergency and you are subject to arrest if you drive on any road.  Sad

More updates as I get them.

I used to live in ROC, and BUF sure gets it a lot of snow. I heard of it on the weather this AM, they are saying it is 24" overnight last night.

Do you know any reg# on the aircraft involved?

Some areas got upwards of 30" overnight and they are saying could be until Tuesday-Wednesday before some people get power/water back. This is got to be the worst storm we've had like this ever. Set the record for the earliest Lake-effect snow on record, which is a problem because none of the county utility trucks have the plows on and salt isn't in much supply now until the first of November. Freaky indeed.

The DC-9 that I was able to see looks like is was either blown by the wind or was parked on a remote park. I can't get the reg # at all because there is still a lot of blowing snow and the entire aircraft is just a white blob. The nose is pitched up at about a 30 deg angle, and the tail is on the ground. I heard that A/C suffered quite a bit of aft damage and someone from inside the airport told me that there is reason to believe that there is hydraulic fluid leaking out all over the tarmac.

The other aircraft(s) involved, I have no details on. Sorry.

I heard here at work the weight of the snow which is very wet and heavy on the horizontal stab moved the CG behind the MLG and the aircraft rotated onto its tail.

My parents are flying in today for the SUNY Buffalo parents weekend. They were supposed to arrive at 8:30 am this morning but apparently all flights to BUF were canceled... interestingly enough the airport website shows every flight for the morning arriving "on-time" even though the airport is officially closed until noon.

It's a NWA bird, in the new colors. I'll do a bit of research.

The in-bound flight was Northwest 1126, a 9-4

Of interest, a lot of flights diverted to ROC last night when the runway was closed for two hours. There was a Ryan 732, a AirTran 712's, and a handful of E-jets. They all flew the 10-minute flight between midnight and 1 EDT (EST?), only to be trapped.

Here's a picture of the poor NWA craft, from WGRZ.com and kudos to photojournalist John Wichrowski:

Here's a link to the (rather brief) story they ran:

Wow, a friend here in JAX was supposed to be flying in today to BUF. I was shocked when he told me his flight was cancilled due to snow.
