Any Problems With Carrying An Auto GPS On Board?

I just got a GPS for my car and I'd like to take it with me next time I go to Europe. Has anyone had any problems carrying a (switched off of course!) GPS on board?

I've never had a problem taking them in my carry-on. I take my GPS all over North America and on overseas trips. I put all my electronic things (except PC) in a big zip lock bag, and I always carry them onboard.

I just noticed yesterday, though, that American Airlines has in their magazine that GPSs are one of those forms of electronics not to be used onboard. I don't see how they would interfere with anything (but then again I'm not an electrical engineer).

No, it receives signals and therefore is no different from a radio in terms of regulations....which you cannot use in flight in most cases....BUT...some airlines specifically allow handheld GPSs during cruise flight...Delta is OK with it.

You might wanna search the archives...been discussed before.

Been discussed several times - do a search. But just off the top of my head, CO, UA, and NW allow it (above 10,000 ft of course). WN, AA, and TZ do not allow it at all.

No, I never had any problems carrying a switched-off GPS on board. If you want to switch it on inflight, I would suggest asking a flight attendant. In my experience you will often be allowed to use it.

On second thoughts, if something goes wrong with the aircraft's navigations systems, let the crew know that you could help them navigate around provided they let you sit in the jumpseat Big grin  bigthumbsup

Maybe, but as far as the FAA goes, anything that transmits OR receives is a no-no. A receiver usually has an internal 'transmitter' as part of it's design, but I guess that's not relevant anyway, since a receiver is not allowed....unless specifically allowed by a particular airline (as already mentioned).

I used my Garmin on AF flight last week and even talked about our position with a CCM + had it turned on during landing and was not a problem. Also used it on LH before, without problems.

I hope you know, that plane would not crash because of one GPS unit on in the cabin, even if it was a US airliner.

As far as I know, it might well be allowed by the airline you flew, but what you're telling me is not evidence of that fact.

I could be listening to my FM radio in the cabin, and there's no sign hangin in the cabin saying "Radios allowed", and the plane might not crash because it's on....but it's beside the point.

Well, F/As saw me with my gps and did not say anything, so I assume that it was not a problem to use them, switch them on during the flight (any part of it). Oh, and also the plane did not crash  duck .
The flights were operated by MA, BA, W6, 5P, LH, and U2.

Are you sure CO allows GPS on board? I could have sworn on my last flight with them, CLE-IAH-HNL, GPS was included with portable T.V.'s and radios as "contraband" items.

According to http://gpsinformation.net/airgps/airgps.htm, they switched from "GPS not allowed" to "GPS allowed" in April, 2005. On one flight, I had it on just before pushback, and the F/A said it wasn't allowed at that time, but having it on at cruise was no problem.

And, people, please - nothing electronic is allowed to be used on climb/descent. It doesn't matter that turning it on "won't cause the plane to crash". Rules are rules, and if you can't follow them, you should find another way to get where you're going.
