Take a look at this:
http://www.wdsu.com/video/9895200/index.html

A group representing the aviation, tourism, convention, and business interest of New Orleans are persuing the formation of a new airline with a hub at MSY. Citing the considerable lack of capacity at MSY following Katrina, and the desire to stimulate the rebounding economy, this group plans to use private funds and state backing to begin service as early as mid-2007.

The video does an excellent job describing the venture, and I must say it's rather good journalism for a local television regarding aviation.

Here's some details:

- Proposal began pre-Katrina, but is now considered essential to help stimulate the economy.
- Eventual fleet of 54 mid-sized aircraft with 150 daily flights
- Destinations include 41 major U.S. cities, all regional airports in Lousiana, and 10 Latin/Canadian cities
- Low fare model simmilar to WN, B6, or FL.
- Would create 3,000 local jobs
- Startup cost estimated at $2 billion from private investors, plus $300 million from State of Lousiana as a fall-back funds in escrow (ideally, never touched)

Thoughts? Feel comfortable with "quasi-State" participation?

I'm personally interested in the logistics of it all. How do they plan on obtaining an initial fleet in only 6 months?

Ah good catch, search let me down. I've suggested deletion unless for some reason this thread gains a lot of replies.

$2 billion in startup money and a $300 million state slush fund??!!??

No wonder Louisiana government is a joke.

To put things in perspective, Jet Blue was started with $130 million. You could BUY control of AirTran for less than $500 million.

I love long German words like 'Freundschaftsbezeigungen'.

Yes, our state government is a joke, but not for that reason. They're not going for guaranteeing that loan.

More than one of us, myself included, think DirectAir is a pipe dream.

They say only 'full size' jets and serving 'all Louisiana cities'!?!? I bet an A318 in Alexandria will make a mint!!  Wink

Off the topic, I plan on starting a blimp sevice in Louisiana next year just a soon as the state kicks in $10,000,000!

I never gleaned only mainline jets, rather they would being service with mainline aircraft. They obviously won't be serving all 41 U.S. cities, international destinations, and Louisiana cities with a full fleet from day one.

I too would be personally suprised to see it fly, and shocked if they could begin opperations by spring 2007 (as stated).

In my almost 20 years here, the only intrastate jet service I can recall was Emerald something or other, which flew DC-9's between MSY and SHV back in the late 80's. Even the commuter lines have had a tough go it over the past 15 years (see Royale, L'Express, USAirways Express).
