Dallas Morning News AP Article
Associated Press - 6:18 CDT

Quote:

Airline regulators have given their blessing to a new law that lifts restrictions on long-haul flights from Dallas Love Field in 2014 and allows immediate one-stop service from Dallas to the rest of the country, according to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

A law signed last week by President Bush will repeal the 1979 Wright Amendment and allow nonstop service from Love Field to the rest of the country in 2014.

American Airlines planned to begin offering one-stop tickets from Love Field through St. Louis beginning Monday night, a spokesman said.

It was unclear how quickly Southwest Airlines might act. A spokeswoman for Southwest, which fought to repeal flight limits at its Love Field home, said the Dallas-based carrier was still waiting for official word from regulators.

The law that Bush signed required the Federal Aviation Administration to notify Congress that it could safely manage the airspace around Love Field and nearby Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport with the additional service at the Dallas airport.

The FAA notified Congress on Monday, Hutchison's office said.

Alright so is it 2014 or is it Monday? I read that thing 3 times and it looks to me like they won't be able to offer non-stop to the whole country until 2014. So are the AA flights to St. Louis just coincidental? What is the farthest they can fly from Love field now?

Effective immedaitly, any airline can offer flights and tickets to DAL assuming the passenger stops in a state under the old wright amendment.

In 2014, any airline can offer non stop service to DAL.

WN is choosing to do theirs Oct 19th, and AA theirs on the 23rd.

How do you mean are the STL flights with AA coincedential?

I would imagine that with the full thing repealed in 2014, all flights would be available to anywhere in the nation. Of course, this is just what I gather from the article. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out.  yes

Either way, the city will see some more traffic headed their direction.  checkmark

Maybe I should clarify my question:

* Prior to this new law, what were the specific restrictions imposed on flights to/from DAL?
Answer: "The Wright Amendment, enacted in 1979, was intended to generate growth at the Dallas-Fort Worth International airport. The agreement limits flights to and from Love Field to airports in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Missouri."

* What changes are effected immediately as a result of the new law?
Answer: "allows expanded one-stop service from Dallas Love Field immediately...The flights must stop in Texas or a nearby state to comply with the last vestiges of a 1979 law called the Wright Amendment...Additionally, the law reduces the number of gates at Love from 32 to 20 -- the lion's share of the remainder will go to Southwest, with American and Continental getting a few."

* What happens in 2014 that is different from the immediate changes, as a result of the new law?
Answer: "eliminate [all other] provisions of the Wright Agreement restricting flights to and from Love."
