KE: More Planes; IAH, MIA Passenger Flights

Korean Air President and COO, Jong Hee Lee, today has said that Houston and Miami are likely to be the 14th and 15th US cities added to Korean Air's US passenger network. It would be interesting if what he says comes true.

He hints that Houston is quite likely to launch next year, and Houston has been talked about a lot. I'd pretty much say the chances of Houston happening are close to 100%. MIA is definitley a surprise, but I've always thought if any airline ever tries to launch a Miami-Orient flight, Korean Air would be the first one willing to do it, because they take more risks than most Asian carriers on entering smaller to-Asia traffic markets, such as Dallas, Prague, and St. Petersburg (Russia).

Korean Air has the most extensive US network of any Asian airline, and flies to many cities with few or no Asian airlines, including Anchorage, Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, and Washington, D.C.

Also stated are potential new cargo flights to Tel Aviv, Moscow, Istanbul, and Mexico City, joining the recently added Stockholm and Miami.

If the Korean plan for a Seoul-Houston flight becomes a reality -- which I agree is virtually certain because of the SkyTeam partnership with Continental -- I think that could likely spell the end for the airline's D/FW-Seoul flights. The D/FW flights have hung on, surprisingly, since the Delta pull-out that killed lots of feed for the route. However, if Korean opened up a flight a few hundred miles south to a big partner's hub, I doubt if North Texas would retain its flights. Too bad.

Wow! Very good. But as stated, I would leave it to Korean to start the MIA service. I think it is a wise move. Beats a 1World airline to the punch though. I would have thought 1 of them would have been first to start MIA service

The one thing about Korean Air is that they have a good record of "pre-announcing routes" and then actually starting them, such as Las Vegas and Seattle, which were pre-announced months and months (SEA I think by over a year) before any official PR.

MIA-ICN is 7747 mi. What kind of equipment do you think KE would use? 744ER or a 772ER?

Would there be much O&D between the two? MIA could be a good gateway to South America for Korean travelers, but I would think that LAX, ORD, IAH, DFW, JFK would provide many more connecting opportunities.

They dont have the 744ER pax only Qantas does. But they do have 744F.
This flight would also be a little too for the 722ER to a stop would be needed.

Yes, but CO and KE are in an actual alliance.

Great news. I'd bet that both are started with the 772ER. Tough titties for DFW if they lose the route, aren't they going to get a Qantas flight once they recieve the 772LR?

Don't forget, too, that Dallas has a decent Korean population north of downtown.

Things are going to develop fast for IAH (IMO), I would expect flights to India and a couple of Gulf Airlines.

Emirates, QR, Ethiad, Gulf Air, Air India, Kuwait Airways are strong possibilities for IAH service in the next 4-5 years IMO.

MIA ... what is the business demand to Korea? This would probably not be daily. Maybe 3 or 4 per week. KE has lots of destinations but frequency is not that high.

As for South American feed. MIA or IAH both are good. But IAH would give a KE/Skyteam FF member miles through CO.

With KE doing all this expansion, I wonder if other East Asian carriers will respond (JL, NH or OZ). I know that OZ lacks fleet, NH is being very very conservative and focusing on improving product (Goal: become #1 in Asia) and JL is just getting done with a merger. Untill now JL has had more frequency to the US and actually had good feed from Korea and other parts of Asia. Now KE is stepping up and offing even more feed and destinations this could take a little more from JL.

Hey STT,

While I may seem a little pessimistic in regards to IAH's ability to attract foreign metal, I actually agree in large part with your assessment about IAH's future. I am just one of those who does not believe in getting his hope up too high, too soon. Indeed I would be elated to see KE's Boeings at IAH and per MAH4546's stellar history of accurate reporting, I believe that it is a reality, the $64 question is.....when?

I find it interesting that almost all of the new carriers looking at IAH are either Asian of African DT, yet noting from Europe or S. America.

In the mid 1990s Houston came very close to getting nonstop service to Italy either via AZ or CO (or both), they had a strong alliance then with CO's Dual livery DC-10.

Would definitely love to see Alitalia serve Houston, AZ could serve MXP and CO could serve FCO.

As for South America the most likey carrier would be Lan Chile (they already have cargo flights to IAH right?), Lan would probably serve Houston with a stop enroute via Peru or Ecquador.

Actually they did back in the 90s early 00s.

Considering their financial status, I am not holding my breath. Frankly I would expect to see them re-start LAX as rumoured over an untried IAH.

Oh ye of little faith...CargoItalia did make ONE flight with their own metal and a few others with Gemini service back in August. Exact date was August 11th for their own airplane.

Thanks for the update on the Cargoitalia situation. I am tyring to keep up with events back home all the way down here. So far none of IAH's intrepid bunch of shooters have managed to get this bird in it's Cargoitalia's plumage. Hopefully I'll get a chance at it when I return next week.

Definately. Their feed because they are in oneworld is much better.

I think there is no feed at DFW for KE because there is no Skyteam hub there. The flight is still sticking based on O&D. IAH could be good for it.
