Caribbean Airlines And DeHavilland Aircraft

Is there a reason why many Caribbean airlines use DeHavilland Aircraft?

Probably for STOL ops. The BE1s are too small, and the EM2/SF3 don't have as STOL performance.

The Dash 8 has indeed been a major seller in the Caribbean region because it offers the versatility of short take-off and landing plus the ability to turn around quickly and operate the many short hops that characterise Caribbean aviation. Yes, the Conviasa plane shown is the Dash 7 but that actually has many of the same attributes - in fact it was the predecessor of the Dash 8 and has more impressive STOL performance.

The Dash 8s have been used by BWee Express (closed), LIAT, Caribbean Star, Caribbean Sun, Tobago Express, Air Jamaica Express, EC Xpress (closed), DC Express (closed), Surinam Airlines (not anymore though) and Bahamasair. In many instances they replaced HS 748s - another turboprop with a long and strong career in the region, though now extinct.

I don't think that plays any role at all. Honestly, since we were once rules by the Queen, and Canada was once ruled by the queen, privately owned companies (BW when they bought Dash8's and 8B then and now) and a multi-government owned company (LIAT) are going to purchase aircraft from a privately owned Canadian company?? BW is based in T&T and T&T, though part of the Commonwealth, has had nothing to do with the Queen or Britain since 1976 when we completely and totally severed all ties and became a republic.

Somehow, I have a feeling that price, performance, availability, financing, pilot preference, maintenance, CEO preferences and competitor's decisions had a role to play.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but while Caribbean aviation is influenced by politics, and fleet decisions are certainly influenced by politics- I daresay that Canada/ Politics? the Queen has NO role whatsoever to do with teh Dash8's.

To your point though, I do believe that GW, Blair, the EU and Caricom will have an impact where the bidding involves a US , UK or EU firm!!
