Rumour: AF Or SS, LH, KL Or MP To SJO In 2007

Hey All,

For the past few weeks, a lot of rumours have been up that there are going to be some new European flights to SJO this next high season in 2007.

Strong talks about LH from FRA, KL from AMS via AUA, either AF or SS from Paris and the chance that MP will return with the 763 again and let go of the A320 they are currently leasing from Grupo TACA, are some of the strongest talks going on in Costa Rica.

I have been following A.net posts about this and have found some info, like that MPH will keep the N464TA leased A320 from TACA until March and that there is a stong chance of an AMS-AUA-SJO-PTY route as well and if this is the case, MP will stop their service into SJO.

I am most certain that SJO will see at least another widebody in 2007 and I would like to see what all you guys think or what some of you do know  .

Thanks!!
Tomas.

I haven't heard anything about SJO, but there have been constant rumblings about either KLM or Air France operating into PTY, and for now it looks that, if it were to happen, Air France would operate such a flight. The KLM Summer schedule for the Caribbean has been finalized and AUA is linked with both SXM and BON, so it is unlikely that a PTY flight would be operated by KLM. My money is on Air France. Keep in mind that Copa is an associated member of Skyteam and it is likely that AF/KL wants to make good use of a plethora of onward connections available at PTY.

Quoting Tomascubero (Thread starter):
Strong talks about LH from FRA

I heard about the very same rumours and there have been apparently negotiations between Oscar Arias and Wolfgang Mayrhuber, but nowadays, I presume it has only to do with LHT and Coopesa setting up a joint MRO facility at SJO (which I'm labeling Lufthansa Technik Alajuela until an official name is announced for the new MRO).

If LH does enter the Central American market, FRA-SJO-PTY or maybe MUC-SJO-PTY with an A343 would be the likely flight, plus DE would then cease service.

Quoting Tomascubero (Thread starter):
AF or SS from Paris

SS is unlikely for ORY-SJO, however if they do enter the Costa Rican market, it will be for an ORY-LIR flight. AF would in turn likely choose SJO as a destination from CDG.

Quoting Tomascubero (Thread starter):
that there is a stong chance of an AMS-AUA-SJO-PTY route as well

Why not go AMS-SJO-PTY-AMS without the stop in AUA and compete with IB more direct? Nevertheless, combining SJO with PTY makes perfect sense, as this way it can cater to both leisure and business passengers.

I read recently in the print edition of the Costa Rican business daily La República an interview with an Air France-KLM official, who's the manager for the Mexico-Central America section, where he confirmed that expansion into Central America is being studied, and that there certainly is demand. I guess that if AF-KL do enter the market, IMO it would probably be KL serving which already has brand recognition after having previously served SJO.

And also, what about possible increase in frequencies by IB?

Quoting Tomascubero (Thread starter):
if this is the case, MP will stop their service into SJO.

About damn time if this is true (except for Martinair Cargo and their MD-11s, those should stay  Wink ). Why the hell did they choose to stop serving SJO with their own equipment and go for the ACMIs with Miami Air and later with TA? Was it because the route was doing bad or simply because they wanted a quicker turnaround?

Yes I believe you are right, although this can be a good increase for even weirder traffic, I am happy with COOPESA now, imagine "Lufthansa Technik Alajuela" doing maintenence on widebodies Big grin!

I believe SS would a bigger candidate for LIR since they are the vacation type airline but who knows, look at TS's flights from YYZ and YUL at the high season, only SJO and no LIR and they are a vacation airline! But LIR is going to lead the way, they will already beat us with a flight from LGW next year  Sad.

I do think the most possible candiates are KL or AF, but since they are the "Air France & KLM Group" I would be expecting only one of them to be coming here, like you say, KL with more chances for there past influence here. Hopefully they will send their 772's, I would die for them!

I guess this a chance, but a daily flight of the A346 already has Alterra going like crazy, imagine handling two of these monsters with out tiny airport!?

Speaking of IB, today, EC-JOH arrived at 1500Lt from PTY since they MAD-SJO flight yesterday was cancelled due to bad wx at SJO. Departed around 1630Lt off RWY25.

I love MP's MD-11F here but have only had the chance to meet with it once when it was very late, to my surprise, it was the awesome PH-MCU, "Prinses Maxima."

Cheers all!
Tomas.

TS is a bit different from SS. SS is part of the TUI group and I simply don't see them go to SJO given that they seem to sell regular holiday packages. TS on the other hand, seems to be more for both the regular vacationer (those who go to the beaches) and perhaps for eco tourists visiting the country and using SJO as the most convenient place to start the trip all over the country for this purpose. LIR is IMO mostly for regular tourists who want to go to the beaches, like those of Guanacaste province and/or the northern part of Puntarenas province.

Whatever happened with the rumour about BA returning to SJO from LHR (not from LGW like last time)? If BA was to replace their 767s with 787s, I could see them re-starting LGW-SJO, unless they want to go from LHR to SJO with a stop in NAS or in GCM. Those rumours about LHR-SJO with stopover involved the 767 as equipment.

A T7 might only be used by KL if premium and leisure demand are high and demand a nonstop flight. For flights into SJO or PTY, KL will likely use MD-11s, which are to be specifically configured for leisure destinations.

Interesting points you make here Richie   , TS is definetly a multi-purpose vacation airline!  .

I just started a post about that, let's see what the people have to say for us!

Very true but I would love to see how the competition between IB and KL would turn out, I would be optimistic and say that demand would go up in a matter of months and a T7 to be used. Besides, who knows, an MD-11 could go AOG and a nice T7 sent for us as a replacement! .

Cheers!
Tomas.

What about AMS-PTY-UIO instead of the UIO & GYE run?
I reckon this is a nice route both attractive for connecting as well as O&D pax.
Just my 2c.

Yes, I read it too and had also read the one in La Nacion about LH very possibly flying into SJO in the days of the Presidential Inaguration, it said that Oscar Arias (our President) was going to speak with LH about flights into SJO from Germany and nothing about the Lufthansa Technik, so what ever happened with that?
