I've heard that the Q400's are already back to Bombardier. What happened? Will they come back?

They'll be back ... It has to do with the go! issue amongst the local airlines

From what I have heard, they're not permanently going back to BBD but have been temporarily put out of service until Island Air figures out how to use them without competing directly with GO!

They didn't want to compete with GO!'s increadibly low fares. Probably a smart move.

Here is a news story on the subject

The gist is:
"The added capacity of go! in the market, high fuel prices and ongoing fare wars have affected the industry," said Rob Mauracher, Island Air's chief executive officer,

Island Air should just kick Go!'s butt at their own game. Those Q400s have a lower CASM and lower trip costs overall than Go!'s RJs and should allow Island Air to undercut Go! and compete more profitably at the same fare levels.

The problem is, Go's fare levels are already below the point where anyone can make money, including Go and Island Air.

There was only one Island Air DHC8-400 ever operated out in HNL, N539DS.(see this site for the 2 photos of it out there, not trying to plug mine!)
The other one never made it out to HNL, but was fully painted and is apparently in use as the company demo currently? Not 100% sure on that part, but was told that when I visited their dispatch office a couple of weeks ago...
