Why Did Jetblue Pick Longbeach For ORD Route

Why did jetblue pick Longbeach for the Ord route. Not to many people even fly to long beach If i was jetblue I think I would fly into fll. But down to the point why long beach?

IIRC, UA flew ORD-LGB using 767s in the 1980s as well... I'm not sure when that route ended.

More recently, as part of AA's failed fight against B6 (legal and otherwise) at LGB, AA served ORD-LGB from 2001-2003, too, using Mad Dogs. It was somewhat successful, but AA decided to move the ORD flights to JFK and DFW. The JFK flights were dumped in October 2004, and AA pulled out of LGB entirely in December 2005, when the last of the DFW flights were dropped.

Of course, AA blamed the then-controversial relaxation of Wright AAmendment restrictions (stuttering AAs intended), but the fact was this: when AA stopped LGB-JFK, their days at LGB were numbered.

LGB is a mini hub for B6. I booked my first B6 flight today! ord-jfk in January. I also played around on the site and it was pretty easy to get to most west coast cities with a simple connection in LGB. I seriously hope they do well out of ORD. There already is a lot of competition out of ORD and MDW to NYC. Now that we have JFK with B6 we have all of our bases covered to NYC.

So did I... only I booked myself on the inaugural ORD-LGB flight (B6 Flight 937) on January 4.

I haven't seen my aunt (who lives in the So-Cal area) in a long time, so I thought that flying out there would be a great way to both see her and introduce myself to the "JetBlue experience". And those fares sealed the deal for me... $89 from ORD-LGB and $36 on the way back.

The answer should be obvious: it connects the 2nd and 3rd largest cities in the United States. Okay, LGB is in Long Beach but it is well within the Los Angeles cachement area, more or less a suburb, although Long Beach is a good sized city in its own right. B6 will be going somewhat head-to-head with WN and their LAX-MDW route.

BUR and LAX are closer for the majority of what people consider Los Angeles, which is one big reason B6 opened up flights in crowded BUR.

I'm not going to get into the whole "LGB is/is not in the LA-area" thing. However, looking at jetBlue's run at LGB, you'd be silly not to admit that they are doing pretty damn well there. From day one, people thought jetBlue was crazy to launch JFK-LGB and look how well it has done. Same thing with BOS, IAD, FLL, OAK, LAS, SLC.

LGB has done great so far and ORD is a very nice addition. Not the ENTIRE area lives near and/or prefers LAX. LAX is congested and delay-prone. At LGB, it's like you own the place! There is definitely a market at LGB and these ORD flights should do just fine.

Long Beach is much easier to access compared to LAX for people who live south of LAX. I live North so Burbank is closer to me but I still love LAX. LGB seems to be popular with my friends who live further south, such as those in Orange County.

But when you say LGB is not LA, even if it isn't Los Angeles, there are a ton of people around LGB and in the OC that find LGB and SNA the most convenient to them so B6 is a viable option. Plus when I was in LA in August, we did a lot of driving and LGB-our hotel in Hermosa Beach wasn't that bad of a trip and a much nicer ride then my house-LGA which is considerably closer. All I am saying is there are more people then just in LA proper, and a pretty big group of people live down by LGB and the OC where LGB is a viable option.

It all depends on what part of Los Angeles you live in. I live in where Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and Hawthorne meet, so Id be foolish not to fly out of LAX since I could practically walk there. But for people in the Torrance, Long Beach, Orange County, and South Los Angeles Areas, its not a bad trip at all. If you are North of downtown Los Angeles, youll go crazy getting there  banghead  .

Congratulations to B6!!!!! I wish the best of luck to them on their new LGB-ORD route.

I have some friends who live in the South Bay, Long Beach and in the "Orange Curtain" and they prefer going through LGB over LAX anyday! They don't have to deal with the 405 and in general, get a much better product than what's offered out of LAX on UA & AA to ORD and WN to Midway! The only difference is the FF programs and they too are getting to be a royal pain in the tukus.

I hope in due time, B6 is able to get more slots in this slot restricted airport. I think they have a great thing going and I feel the city of Long Beach and surrounding areas see that as well. It would be nice to see them bring in the 190, but as we all know, this has been talked to death and on the other hand, it would be a perfect fit for some new routes out of there.

And the reverse, as someone who lives in the south bay, LAX and LGB are of equal time for me. Personally, I prefer LGB due to the dual stair loading.  bigthumbsup 

But offer me a flight out of BUR (which is best for my boss), no way. He couldn't understand why I refused to consider that drive... Los Angeles is such a spread out market that it needs the many airports. The money is concentrated in the "West side", OC, and a lesser extent my south bay. The "West Side" flies out of BUR and LAS. OC flies out of SNA, LGB, and LAX. The south bay utilizes LAX (mostly) and some from LGB. While ONT is growing, until there is fast rail access to there from the Westside (e.g., build the Wilshire subway line and have metrolink diverted to ONT), it won't be able to offload LAX much.

Its sad, but traffic is choking this city.

There is scuttlebut that the FAA is going to force more slots onto LGB. Now that is guaranteed to create an allergic reaction with the NIMBY's. Personally, I just want to see the new terminal built! If new slots are added, I don't expect to see them before 2016.  Sad

Because LGB is their West Coast hub and JFK is their East Coast hub. If you want to fly on JetBlue to the LA area - you have to go to LGB. It makes sense to me - I'm sure there are a number of So Cal'ers that would like to go to Chicago - but I could be wrong.

I'm from Virginia and all BUT.... as far as I've seen - it's one continuous city from Burbank to Orange County with lots of people in between that can support many airports.

I did not say that LGB is as convenient as LAX or BUR for most people in Los Angeles. It is however, acceptably close. It is certainly closer than two airports controlled by Los Angeles World Airports, ONT and PMD.

I do have to say that the "regional" airport plan is silly. Most of the high yield passengers are closer to LAX, BUR or SNA. However SNA and BUR are essentially capped and LAX is out of gates. Sure there are a lot of people who live near ONT, but they are mostly low yield passengers. Most of the fat cats live closer to the ocean.

They got one back from AA when AA pulled out of LGB. If you remember B6 gave up the slots for AA to come. The the whole thing with B6 vs AS for the slots argument came about with that.

To everybody else, why waste fighting about area and catchment. Means nothing to the airlines and high ups that decide where to fly, and to us, let's get back to the topic to which we all enjoy, airline and the business it offers. Years and years ago, do you think that when Western Pacific went in and built up COS like they did, were they only looking at the COS area, or its catchment area? Prob number 2. Friends use to drive from outside Fort Collins all the way down I75 to COS to catch cheaper travel out of COS because of the competition and lower fares. That alone shows what an airline can do to get people on their planes. Western Pacific looked at this and their catchment area was the entire I75 corridor as they called it, far south and north to the WY border. That alone can range up to a 2hour drive, so if take that example and offer that to LGB, for example, 2 hours is a pretty nice catchment, mind you all the LA basin traffic.

And as mentioned, yes, BUR was opened as a relief to the overall success of the JetBlue ops in LGB. But as we all know, LGB is slot controlled and slots are taken, so, why should they wait around, they offered double service from ONT at first, to which I heard didnt perform so well, so, let's keep looking. BUR it was, 3 gates readily available, nice catchment area, and, worse case scenario, on a bad day, fuel diversions are possible. Oh well, dont you think all those people who book out of BUR are willing to take that chance to avoid the larger and more conjested LAX, probably so, or I don't think JetBlue would still be there.

A number of years ago AA tried to flight off B6 in Oakland by running flights to JFK. AA discovered that many of their higher fare paying passengers from their SFO flights were using the lower priced OAK. The OAK flights were dropped.

Back when I was a little one, I was on that exact UA flight back in 1995 (before the current terminals were built). Yes, it was operated by a 733 (in the 1974 Saul Bass colors, I do have to add), and it seemed pretty full.

I also had some not-so-fond memories of the old ONT terminal. It was dated, cramped, and crummy compared to the then-new SNA terminal, which was the airport that our family normally chose for So-Cal flights when I was little. But, as I look back, the old ONT terminal was still better than my visit to LAX Terminal 3 in 2001. That terminal looked like it was straight out of the movie "Airplane!", which was filmed there (one of my favorite movies, BTW). About the only differences were a Burger King, refurbished restrooms at the gate areas, and improved seating (the same Herman Miller seats found at SNA, ORD, DTW, and even my hometown airport of FWA).
