Can't be doing too well if this is happening:

Lone passengers and protests a success make not. But let's not judge. Hopefully the luck will change for them.

Doesn't sound too good for Porter. ACJazz may be able to finally get their hands on some DH8-400'S...  stirthepot   duck

Hmm, a quote by protesters saying "Another empty bus" is hardly an objective assessment of the situation at Porter. Besides that, what loads could be reasonably expected from a start-up airline after one week of operations ?

I just got back from a weekend trip with Porter. I was really impressed with their product. It was almost like flying short haul business class for the price of economy. I walked to the airport and checked in while waiting for the ferry, then literally 30 seconds at security and I was in the departure lounge. The lounge was pretty impressive, free internet, leather sofas and complimentary snacks and soft drinks. 35 minutes after take off we touched down in ottawa.

Both the flights were only 1/3 full and I question how many people actually paid for the tickets. The service onboard was friendly the service consisted of biscuits and free wine, beer or soft drinks which was served in a glass. The cabin crew seemed enthusiastic and were not jaded like some on the established airlines. The pitch on the seats was amazing too, I'm fairly tall and there was plenty of space left over. q400's are great

I think that Porter may have to do a marketing blitz including TV and Radio ads to get the word out. I think that also once word gets around the Toronto Jet set about how much more convienent and good the service is there maybe more passengers. But it certainly is going to be an uphill struggle.

I just heard that Porter is expanding to YUL on Dec 10.

DeLuce was a savvy bush pilot in northern Ontario, but he will have to excel if he wants to follow in Max Ward's shoes (Wardair). He still plans flights to New York and Boston in 2007....

I've flown out of the island on occasion, and I think it is quite convenient for those who live and work downtown. But (IMHO) I think Porter will miss the mark, because the "jet set" (or at least the ones who matter most) like their aeroplan perks and connections too much to switch. Very few airlines can compete with AC on the Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal triangle for very long.

Now here's my plan for YTO: AC / Jazz should get its hands on some Q400's, fit them out as all-J, and turn it into a business express to YUL and YOW...

I would have to agree Aeroplan is a VERY formidable opponent, even with its new restrictions.

I think there are some issues with the ferry too. It took forever to load a few trucks on the new ferry and it was the cause of a late departure. I think it will be ironed out once the crew gets comfortable with it. The Q400 is a really nice piece of kit, the climb performance was really impressive.

I agree, would be a great introduction on the high frequency routes where there are numerous J cls travelers, then if the route does well, introduce an all J cls E175/E190..i.e the eastern triangle as you mention, then southbound into the US..ORD/BOS/EWR/LGA...something like CP'S Attache service back in the 80's with B737-300's in J cls (3x3 where centre seats seat back folded down into a table)

they are invisible to the "jet set'' , they are in no GDS, only their own website.. they need to go where business people buy their travel ..Eventually all airlines(even Jet Blue) figure this out but for some its too late!!

yea then maybe the could operate something other than a Beech 1900 to PVD. They used to operate Dash-8's. why couldn't they just leave the Dash-8's there.  Sad

Feel free to check out my trip report:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/88436/

As for how well they will do, they need to:

1. Get their IT systems up-to-date. The website is nice, but not terribly functional. Nearly impossible to print out a boaring pass on my Mac. And, the time my flight boarded / departed was WRONG!

2. Improve their downtown terminal. Basically no signage at all. No schedules. Nothing.

3. Get the TPA to improve the ferry experience. Waiting 10+ minutes for your ferry as your departure time clicks closer is not a nice feeling.

The other big question I have is how they will handle US Customs and Immigration at YTZ. No pre-clearance, no way they will make it. Who wants to fly into ORD or EWR during the European or Asian rush and sit in a line for an hour and a half while everyone in front of you gets scanned? Don't even think about LGA w/o pre-clearing.

I wish them luck, I think they will need it.

next up: YYC, SFO, SYD, AKL, WLG, CMB, BKK, SIN, FRA, VCE, JFK
