Quiet MD-82

Hi everyone,

A few weeks a go I took a flight from Bangkok (new airport) to Phuket. I flew with One-Two-GO (Orient Thai Airlines).

For me this was the first time on a MD-82 and one BIG thing I noticed was that it is so unbelievable quiet. On take-off I got push into my seat and hardly heard the engines. This was such an easy relaxing take off I thought this was so cool. Unfortunatly the rest of the flight wasn't so cool, I'm not a big guy, but even I was very cramped in my seat which was lose!

My question, is this aircraft quiet because the engines are at the back?

The take off with a SIA B777 from Singapore to Amsterdam wasn't so quiet. My seat was on the last row, and the take off was even more exiting then a rollercoaster ride. Being throw from left to right, thundering sound and everything shaking got me a little bit worried for a moment, after lift off the only thing a said to my girlfriend was 'WOW that was some take off'

Correct. Try to seat further to the back and you'll notice that the engines are in fact not very quite at all.

It's because you sat near the front of the aircraft  Wink

As for the SIA 777, each engine provides over 90k lbs of thrust, you can do the math and figure out so much thrust for that noise level is impressive.

Actually when I'm at work, the DL Shuttle MD-80's and the AA MD-80's are kinda annoying b/c they're so loud on takeoff.

If I'm on any of the DC9 class jets I actually request to sit between the engines. Last off the plane, but there's no way in hell you are going to have to hear the crying babies... it's not physically possible to hear anything.

Most older jets, including those with engines on the wings, were much louder in the last few rows of seats, especially on takeoff. I never thought the rear seats on a DC-9, MD-80 or B727 were much louder, if at all, than the last 2 or 3 rows on a 737-200. The early 707s and DC-8s, especially the stretched DC-8-61 and -63 were almost deafening in the last few rows on takeoff as you were so far behind the engine outlets. After thrust was reduced a minute or so after takeoff the noise level dropped significantly and wasn't uncomfortable for the rest of the flight. At crusing speed most of the noise you hear is aerodynamic noise anyway, from the airflow against the fuselage, not from the engines.

Rear-engined aircraft, especially those with long fuselages like the MD-80 and 727-200 are by far the quietest on takeoff if you're sitting near the front. At full thrust it's almost disconcerting how the engine sound almost totally disappears and until the speed builds up and starts creating aerodynamic noise, it's almost completely silent except for the sound of the wleels on the runway..

If you're more towards the front it's quieter (same thing for most other A/C). As you move towards the back it's louder.

But one thing that some of you may or may have noticed while on MD-80's is that on takeoff the engines don't make that (after a while) annoying full power noise (watch the videos if you don't know what I'm talking about) that you hear when you're in front of the engines. I DON'T MEAN THE SPOOLING noise. The circumference and size of the fan blades makes the engines sound a bit more pleasant on takeoff and climb.

In some cases the full power sound can be cool but it can get irritating after a while.

I would have to say opposite. On the 777, it really depends on Engine type. The GEs on the 777NGs are very quiet. PW 777s I have heard to be a tad noisy.

The quietest plane I know (for its size) would probably be the 777-300ER.

Try the Gulfstream 2 or 3, they'll make the MD80 sound like a CRJ. I don't know what they use for the older Gulstreams but they sound just like fighters taking off.

The Boeing purists on this forum will scoff at that idea, as you can see. And of course it will be quieter if you are in row 5 verses row 35A, however I do agree with you. If you think the MD-82 is quiet you would enjoy the MD-90. The noise levels on that aircraft are impressive considering the V2500 engines are the largest and most powerful of any airliner with rear mounted engines.



There's nothing quite like a trijet.
