Before 1980, LH flights between FRA, BOG, UIO, GYE, LIM, LPB, and SCL stopped in JFK. The routing varied on different days of the week. After 1980, these flights, except those to SCL, stopped in SJU instead of JFK. The SCL flights were routed through EZE, GRU, or RIO.

And when I worked for LH at North American headquarters on Long Island, the Germany-JFK-SAWC (South America West Coast) flights were referred to as
"The Banana Boat". The flight usually left JFK for FRA at 2200 but usually got delayed in South America and many times did not leave JFK till 0200 or later.
Westbound flight departed FRA at 1000 but I usually took LH404 which departed at 1300. LH was careful to block seats so that the plane did not fill up between JFK and SAWC, thus preventing people who wanted to fly from FRA to SAWC.

When LH re-routed its West coast South American routes via San Juan and Caracas in the early 80s, many business travellers were upset that LH no longer offered a 10 am departure to JFK, and hence an early arrival into New York. However the airline fairly quickly brought back that flight, which then continued to Philadelphia for a while.
