Looks like EK might get it way and give a plane with a 479 3-class config (with the upper lobe galley option). Boeing has yet to evaluate the business model for the two versions.

That's interesting and it looks like EK isn't the only one interested in the shorter model - I wonder who the others could be.

The clear preference does seem to be with the longer aircraft, which doesn't really surprise me, but I guess that some Asian carriers might like the shorter aircraft for nonstop flights to NY? At the end of the day, however, it depends on who bites. Airlines have been sniffing around the 747-8 for some time, but if the only one who does bite is EK and they want the shorter aircraft, then that will surely be the clincher.

While I have been an advocate of the SkyLoft concept because it would allow a smaller F seat to be used for meals and take-off/landing and then have a true bed and private cabin to retire to, as an F passenger I admit that current and upcoming suites are plenty fine to snooze in and I like being able to get "suiteside" service from the FAs when I desire something.

And with new "private" F suites like EK has on the A345 and intends to put in the A380 (in a new form-factor, I believe), the SkyLoft really becomes superfluous.

I suppose one could try and sell it to Business Class pax, but honestly, for what a SkyLoft would add to the ticket price, you could probably swing First and get extra benefits groundside and airside (nicer lounges, better catering, more attentive service) plus the "private" suite.

The big problem is accessing the overhead area aft of the upperdeck.
The is no practical way to do it from the upper deck and most airlines feel that F pax would not like walking through the Y masses to access their sleeping berths.

They have already have the space, not utilizing it is wasting it.

I wonder how much space is left if they use it for crew rest area, galley with elevator system, and lavatories?

I could see VLA orders staying "soft" until 2009 or 2010 since it won't be until then when the A388 in "customer spec" will have some flight-time under her girdle and the 747-8I will be in flight-test and while it probably won't be in customer-spec, Boeing has enough modeling data on the 747 that airlines should be pretty confident in extrapolating the numbers.

At that point, the customers "fence sitting" will probably commit one way or the other...

It was never all that clear to me that Boeing saw a great use for the loft concept as much as it was a way to distinguish the 748i from the competition and get a few more headlines (worthwhile in it's own right). Much like the luxury concepts for the 388.

I just had an off-the-wall thought...

One of the drawbacks to the SkyLoft is that First Class passengers will have to traverse into the Economy Cabin (I'm guessing around Door 3) to access the stairs to the loft area.

We know BA is planning to move their Business Class to around Door 3 on the 744 fleet.

Could it be possible BA is indeed looking at the 748 and the SkyLoft, and moving Business back there to allow Business Class passengers access to the SkyLofts?

BA First doesn't need them since they already have large suite products. And while the current BA lie-flat Business seats are nice, they are launching a new upgrade to the product. Could SkyLofts be one of those upgrades?

Maybe Branson can put his upper class lounge in there instead? Get the noisy bar away from the sleeping pax, add more room for couches and stuff. Kind of inconvenient for those in the upper deck though, as they have to go downstairs and then up again.

But I suppose he could also make the whole upper deck into Y+ with very luxurious 2+2 spacing, solving that problem.

With the new super-SUD, luxurious all-in-one F suites can be placed on the regular upper deck by 3 class carriers, with J and Y on the main deck. More exclusive, more space, etc. 12-14 suites can be placed up there with 7' beds, side desks, guest chairs, etc.

The paradigm of how the upper deck is used in the 744 and 747classic no longer has to be the case, now that there is so much more room up there...

No, they don't, because I'm talking about the Upper Deck for seating, not the crown space. I even specifically called it the super-SUD, and SUD is the 747 term for Stretched Upper Deck.

It's not my fault the OP is using the wrong term in the thread title. He's talking about the crown space, but calling it the upper deck by mistake...  Wink

I guess why you may have thought I was talking about putting Y+ in the crown is that I used the phrase: "But I suppose he could also make the whole upper deck into Y+." I was referring to my own statement about Upper Class pax needing to come down from the upper deck and then go back up another stair to the lounge, and how that could be solved by not having Upper Class in the upper deck at all.
