DL Quietly Suspends Atlanta-Boise

Looks like Delta quietly suspended Atlanta-Boise service this past weekened. The last flight was 29 October 2006. The route, the only non-stop between Idaho and the Eastern US, is set to resume 13 May 2007, operating four days a week, and will go daily again during peak summer.

When the route was first launched, it was supposed to be seasonal, but it quickly went year-round thanks to strong results. Now it's back to seasonal.

I am amazed they had it thru October. I would think if you can run it thru the extremely busy month of Oct, all Winter should be OK. But, as said above, maybe a/c availability was a reason.

Maybe FL could come in, instead.

I would guess that the plane is needed for routes to the Caribbean and Latin America. There are plenty of flights from SLC-BOI to pick up the slack in the meantime.

Very doubtful. They don't serve SEA year-round, and don't even fly to PDX.

Was talking with friends that work for Delta and supporting connection partners in ATL, and they said that with Delta opening so many more cities international from ATL, and the fares and discounts that were offered, international flights saw very heavy bookings not only through the late summer, but into early fall, so while most U.S. carriers would offer scaled back operations SEPT/OCT into the holiday season, Delta decided some flights still were necessary to accomodate pax to their ATL worldport.

Reason we were talking about this is because I had noticed the BUR nonstop was lost the first week of Sept while some of the other flights, like BOI, were kept. BUR was dropped becuase the L.A. basin already had enough flight support into ATL from LAX, ONT, and SNA.

Doubt it's within the CR9's range...1838 miles is quite a long way, especially when you fly west against the jet stream.

They need the 738 to start up the ATL-POP in the Dominican Republic. This is the D.R.'s least expensive All-Inclusive cluster along the north coast. They were going to just use a CRJ-900 on this one, but demand became too high. I think us Yank's are being corrupted by our Canuck cousins to the north in going to D.R. All Inclusive's for tropical getaways!  crazy   dollarsign   rotfl 
That said SLC-BOI is well covered and there are many more connections east from SLC that in the past would have required an ATL connect for BOI passengers.

The domestic capacity is limited, and if it makes more sense to run this a/c on some Caribbean route, go for it.

In fact, ATL-MBJ next spring is being operated by an MD-88 supplementing the 763 and 738 services at the station by DL. So, one could conclude that they are maxed out on 738 inventory and where they want to go with them.

AC operate their CRJ705s (CR9 with fewer seats) YYC-IAH nonstop which is only 90 miles shorter (1747 vs 1838).

It could be done on a larger CRJ-7X/900, but even those a/c are in short supply in the greater DL and Connection Carrier inventory. With the 732 being gone, they're reallllly short on mainline longhaul equipment for long and thin routes like that. Wait till the loads can justify.

Totally. In my eyes this is the whole purpose of SLC for DL. A hub for midsize and smaller mountain communities. Good examples might by Boise, Spokane, Bellingham, and Eugene. Maybe BOI can pull it off seasonally to ATL, but SLC is perfect to serve these markets for DL.

I don't see FL touching a market like BOI. BOI is barely half a million people. They don't do PDX or SLC, even though the later two are reportedly on their radar scope.

Ohio and Idaho are two entirely different markets. People in Ohio expect to be able to go to DAY and get on a plane rather than drive to CMH, CVG or IND. In a place like Idaho, people are VERY surprised to learn they have air service, and when they realize BOI has something they can't figure out why a place like SLC has MUCH more of it.  laughing

UA similarly had more non-stops from ORD into SLC a number of years ago and had a much larger presence in SLC, until the Western/Delta build-up during the 1980s.

Of course,that is when BOI only had United, Hughes Airwest, and Frontier (I), were it for jet service here. Hell,UA at one time operated 16 jet flights a day, now it is 4.
And the max was 2/day. But on the upside, they have more mainlines to DEN (3), than early-mid 80s, when it was mostly 1 or 2.

Of course, PDX and SLC would be a more competitive market since there are multiple flights from either to ATL (or MDW for that matter).
