I am looking for the best spots to take photographs at Kennedy Airport and LaGuardia Airport in NY City. Any one out there know of any decent locations that are "legal", where you will not be harrassed by security or the police?? Thanks for your help.

For both airport, in order to get ramp shots, you need boarding pass to access the terminal. So you can only get ramp shots when you fly in/out of the airports. Even that, depending on which terminal you use, you might not get any shots. For example, the boarding area International Terminal at JFK doesn't have any windows.
There are several locations around the airports that you can get good take-off and landing pictures.
For LGA, if runway 31 is used for landing, or runway 13 is used for take off, you can go to College Point Blvd. in Flushing. If runway 4 is in used, you can go along Grand Central Parkway or even the rental car parking lot outside LGA. If you have long telescopic lens, you can get aircrafts taxi near runway 4. Go to the Bronx side of the Whitestone bridge for landing shots when runway 22 is in used.
For JFK, if runway 22L/R are used for landing. You can stake out along Rockaway Blvd for excellent approach shots. If runway 13L/R are used for takeoff, or 31L/R are used for landing, you can go to the beach along Far Rockaway. If runway 13L/R are used for landing, you can stay along North Conduit Ave (in most cases, only 13L is used for landing). Runway 4L/R are out of reach unless you can sail a boat into Jamaica Bay.

I live in Rockville Centre L.I. and I have my personal favorites for plane spotting:
I have a handheld scanner, so Before going anywhere, I listen and only if runways 31L and 31R are in use it's worth of going to Kennedy Airport.
The best spot when they are landing on runway 31R (Which is the usual, not the 31L as JZ said), is COSTCO, you can get there by Peninsula Blvrd, or Rockaway Blvd.
If planes are landing on runways 22s, the best place is a little driveway in the middle of Rockaway Blvd, I tried it once, and nobody said nothing, but I think the other cars there were Feds, so I prefer COSTCO.
In La guardia the absolute best place is the College of aeronautics, which has a small tower for spotting. You can go there and say you are going to find some info about the college, and they let you in, then you take the elevator to 3rd floor and you are there, everithing from cameras, scanners and telescopes are allowed.

Thats not true. Delta's terminal has lots of windows and nice view from there. Also you dont need boarding pass to get inside. In American Airlines terminal also you have lots of windows and no need to hold boarding pass.

If Runway 31R is in use at JFK for take off and landing you can see the aircraft no more than 400 feet from you. They are huge!!!!! The spot to see these aircraft is at the US Customs building, adjacent to the B727 US Mail planes that are contracted to Ryan Intl Airlines. I do not know the road to get there but it is the road that takes you to the FedEx, KoreanAir Cargo, Emery,Northwest Cargo, and DHL Terminals. When at the airport look for Cargo terminal signs and follow them. The last right on that cargo road is the US Customs building. Pull into their parking lot and enjoy watching the jumbos takeoff and land. Only if 31R/13L is open.
Also I went with my father to the PolarAir Cargo Terminal (not located on the usual cargo area) and asked if I could tour one of the 747s. The hangar manager gladly gave me a pass and brought me out onto the tarmac. I went insde the B747-100 and sat in the Captains seat. Trust me you don't know how big a B747 really is until you are right next to one. I am 16 and since you're an adult maybe they won't let you tour it, but it won't hurt to inquire.
EWR is another great airport to watch airplanes takeoff and land. Since the runways are parallel (04/22) and the area is open there has to be some great places to watch EWR t/o's an Landings as well. All terminals are accessible I believe so you can get very close to jumbojets and get pictures. Good luck!! Corey S

Hi, I was just at JFK with a friend taking pictures. We were in Terminal 1 (the new one...really beautiful), we were able to see a bunch of take offs from the terminal's eating area upstairs. You can also see some Luftansa or Singapore Airlines B747s at the gate from the terminal. For example, there was a Royal Air Maroc 747, Korean Air 747, Concorde, and a Turkish Air A340 at the gate which you can also see from the terminal.
By far, the better option was to go on the top floor of the parking deck near Terminal 1 and the Delta Air Lines terminal. You can get great shots of delta's planes taxiing into the gates, takeoffs, and some other international ones (we saw Austrian, Mexicana, and even Uzbekistan!)
We were lucky to get escorted onto the tarmac and got a tour of the international part of the airport. So, we got some EXCEPTIONAL shots.
Hope it helps
