Why Did NWA Choose RR For The 787?

I have just noticed that NWA have chosen RR trent 1000 engines for their 787,s that have been ordered. Does anybody have any ideas why they might have gone for the trent as I believe they do not have any other planes with RR? Have they ever used planes with RR?
I did search for this topic but only found one sentence within another thread that mentioned this.

NWA has never ordered RR engines. We only operated the RR powered 757's that NW-O inherited from Republic. But PW didn't win a contract for the 787, and RR probably gave us better financing for the engines and the aircraft.

At the time of ordering 787s NW announced that they had an MoU (or something similar) with GE. It seemed a done deal. But then, some months later, NW announced that they'd chosen RR.

What happened? Did RR just do some great sales work or did GE somehow blow it? I'd love to know.

checkmark  At that point it was an open field.

Good question PM, I'm afraid I don't know the *exact* answer. Part of it might be the triple spools improved durability and fuel economy on *short* flights. Thus I speculate NW will use the planes for long haul followed by a short hop to maximize utilization... But I'm only speculating. Currently GE is promising public numbers a fraction more efficiency (1%) than RR.

The GEnX weight I do not have a good number. After fuel economy, weight is the next biggest selection criteria...  scratchchin

The Trent 1000 weights in at 11,924 lbm.

I thought it was because RR is helping bankroll the 787 for NW. Wasn't there a thread on here recently talking about how RR and Bombardier and a couple other companies were offer large amounts of financing for NW to exit ch. 11?

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! It's a bonus if you can fly the plane again!!

That came some time after the selection of the Trent. My guess is that it was more a case of RR protecting an important deal than part of the original agreement. But I'm only guessing.
