I'll be flying to New Zealand on 15 Dec. My itinerary is DFW-LAX on AA and LAX-AKL on QF. I know AA and QF are oneworld partners. Does this mean I should be able to check in for my flight to AKL in DFW? I remember the last time I visited New Zealand I wasn't able to do this because AA and QF weren't partners yet.
Also, I am an AAdvantage member. Will I be able to get miles on AA for flying on QF? I tried reading the AAdvantage website, but it made it sound like I could only get AA miles if I was booked under the AA codeshare. I went ahead and booked with QF directly because I wanted to get a preferential seating assignment.

I don't think you will be able to check in for your LAX-AKL flight in DTW. I flew PHL-LAS-LAX-SYD in July with United connecting to Qantas, and I had to pick up my bags in LAX and walk them to Qantas in Terminal 4. I think they have seperate ticketing systems, but i'm not 100% sure. Be prepared nontheless to make the walk to T4 in LAX.
You SHOULD be able to get miles on AA for flying QF. Referring to my past example, I got miles on US Airways for flying United/Qantas where United is partners via Star Alliance and Qantas are simply just partners.
You may have to SEND VIA SNAIL MAIL your boarding passes as well as the original receipt that was issued when you booked in order to receive the miles. SO keep them!
...you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you shall return
I believe you have an AA flight number and a Qantas flight number for each leg yes? AA domestic flights often also have a Qantas flight number, and you'll notice this when you look at the departure screens at the DFW airport.
I would think you're bags would be taken care of at LAX.

The answers have been wrong or unclear so far, so I thought I'd clear things up.
You can check you bags and get tickets for your entire itinerary in DFW. However, you will have to walk from T4 to TBIT to catch your flight to AKL. It is a short walk and has some great views of the heavies coming and going from TBIT.
Also, you can receive AAdvantage miles for your Qantas leg. As an added bonus, b/c Qantas is a member of OW, these miles count towards elite status (2 trips to LAX-NAN on FJ reminded me the hard way of how annoying it is to get that many miles w/ no increase in elite status!). Enjoy your trip!
