once while playing out side and plane spotting as usual i saw a Pakistan International A300 and a Gulf air L-1011 almost collide in mid air, the PIA a/c had taken off and was heading out while the Gulf air plane was coming in to land, it was a very unnerving sight i was expecting to see a collision at any moment,the planes were so close, this happened in Karachi in the early 80's.

Back in 1994 I was on the tower of Darwin International Airport, Australia. The same airport was used by the US military, using C-130's and F-18's fighter jets.
On one day, some F-18's were doing some manouvres, and while a Garuda Airbus (I think it was an A300) was about 10 seconds before touch-down, a F-18 just flew along the rnwy from the opposite direction with highspeed, about 100ft above ground. I couldn't believe what I saw! If the F-18 hadn't executed a quick left turn and lift, both aircrafts could have ended up in a disaster. The Garuda Airbus landed normal as usual.
In the evening, the near miss was on the news, so that confirmed that this really was an unusual manouvre.

I don't know if what I saw was a near miss: it happened in London last june (the 23rd if I remember well).
I saw a couple of B757 ( I couldn't recognize what airlines 'cause I saw them just above me) in the sky of London.
They crossed each other coming from directions drawing like a X in the sky and they appeared to my of the same size so I thought that the vertical separation was very small.

When I saw that event I was almost scared 'cause they really seemed to collide. But when they continued on their ways without reactions I thought it was normal considering the busy air space over London.
Do you know of any website where near misses are registered?

Yes. Once, back in the mid 70's, my dad and I had gone out to DFW to meet a friend of his who was coming in on Braniff. We were at the gate waiting for his flight to arrive. The gate looked directly out onto one of the runways, which ran parallel to Braniff's terminal.
There was a red/gold BN 727 coming in to land and there was a green/gold BN 727 holding just off the runway waiting.
All of a sudden, the green 727 turns, gets on the runway and begins it's take-off roll. The red/gold 727 continued it's approach and it was gaining gaining on the green one FAST. Finally, when the red/gold 727 was no more than 10 feet off the ground, it had come within 1 plane length of the aircraft ahead, so it aborted it's take-off. The green 727 took off at a normal angle, but the red one went back up at a much steeper angle. right behind the green one.
I remember another gentleman at the gate was standing next to me and my dad by the window and kind of sucked in his breath and then turned and said "Did you SEE that?"
I swear, if I'd have had a camera, I could have won the Pulitzer prize for photography that year. It was THAT close.

it was at RDU about 4 or 5 months ago. A midway CRJ was on final approach to runway 23R when a NW DC-9 just came out of nowhere. It was flying I would say 300 feet above the flight level of the CRJ right behind it. The DC-9 was way to high for the runway (whereas the CRJ was looking good) and too close to allow the CRJ to clear up the runway anyway. What happened then amazed me. The CRJ continued its landing procedure while the DC-9, only hundreds of feet from the runway took a sharp turn (small small radius) on the right making a 360 degrees while descending steeply to correct for altitude (for a minute I thought It was about to crash). After completing the 360 (which last only a minute or so), the pilot realigned the DC-9 with the runway and landed on 23R only seconds after completing the turn. The CRJ was barely off the runway when the DC-9 touched down. I was really impressed with NWA pilot's abilities!
In that same afternoon an American Md-82 arrived on runway 23R way too high too (this let me think that the ILS might have been down), tried to descend faster, but was still too high. Then the pilot decided to try runway 23L instead, so the MD-82 crossed over to the other runway, losing altitude but not enough to land there safely either. Finally the landing was aborted and the MD-82 flew right over 23L at about 200 feet and turned around to land safely on runway 23R.
What an afternoon for spotters!

I was waiting to board an old Sabre 727 in Faro, Portugal when a Crossair fokker 100 (or something, I can't remember) was on it's take off roll when an Air 2000 a320 tried to land! I think the air 2000 pilot saw the Crossair a/c so it was hesitant. It touched down and then aborted. It pulled up sharply and pulled a tight turn to the left with a high bank angle (probably to stop the passengers from looking down the Crossair's tailpipe!) They were probably about 2 plane lengths apart!

I was in St. Thomas waiting at our gate. I noticed an AA (757 or A300) about to land, but then pulled up hard to miss a plane that was crossing over the runway. I also remember the people running inside.

One time I was at Castle Island in Boston. I was out of view of the airport, but I looked in the direction of the airport to see a Swissair MD-11 doing a parallel take-off with a 767. The MD-11 was apparantly making a landing on Runway 22L. Meanwhile the American 767 was taking-off from runway 22R. At some point the MD-11 decided to abort the landing. Anyone who knows Boston knows that 22R & L are not far enough apart for simultaneous take-offs, so the MD-11 began a sharp turn to its left, while the 767 began a sharp turn to it's right.
Also, the skies over Boston are crowded everyday with traffic US-bound traffic from Europe. On more than one occasion, I have seen two planes cruising toward New York...and eachother. Only when it appeared that an "Aluminium Shower" was imminant, did the planes both turn away from eachother in a hurry.

It happened once with me. At the local airport, the 2 sets of rwys are ALMOST parallel. ie they are not exactly parralel.
Once we were watching aircrafts landing and take-off from a friends terrace, when we saw 2 aircraft approaching the airport. One was an Airforce HS748 and the other was a Airbus A320 of Indian Airlines. Both aircraft were on final approach with the flaps fully down, and It seemed that the faster A320 was going to catch with the slower prop ahead of it. We watched in horror as the 2 aircraft got closer and closer, but.. nothing happened! The A320 landed first, with the other aircraft landing leisurely.
It was later that a pilot friend told us of the 2 runways and optical illusions.

Any parrallel landing at SFO feels like a near miss! It's particularily amazing landing next to a 747...you can actually see the heads of the passengers on the other plane through the windows as you glide ever closer and finally touch down.... very amazing!

At some airports such as STL you can sit during busy times and see 2 or 3 aborted landings in a hour and a half. I saw three (2 twaMD-80s and 1 WN 737) have to abort landings to runways already occupied. Man does STL need that other runway fast!!!

a couple of weeks ago I was walking out on our tarmac and saw an ASA CRJ pilot line up on the wrong runway....he was coming in and a 757 scooted onto the runway to start his takeoff....the CRJ immediately aborted the landing......I'd say the guy was about 2 miles out when he aborted....
