Delta Ending Kinston, NC Service

Delta will end service to Kinston, North Carolina on 6 January 2007, leaving Allegiant as the airport's only airline. Service to Kinston was launched in 2005 alongside service to Hickory, NC. It fared better than the Hickory flights, which ended early this year, but, apparently, not good enough.

Well, this is very sad news. I thought the flights were doing well. But Kinston is kinda in a bad location... stuck between RDU and EWN, whom can both pull in much more traffic than ISO. I hope Delta decides to move the flights to EWN and give it a try there.. I'm sure they will see much better results due to the higher passenger count and more business opportunities.

EWN? Is that New Bern, NC? I'm sorry to hear that Kinston is losing DL. I remember PI serving that airport. My dad used to fly into Kinston on business flying PI.

Yup.. sure is..

I just think Delta could do well with 2x ATL and possibly 1x JFK. New Bern would be a better tourist destination because it is closest to the coastal destinations and military destination (Cherry Point). Also, there are just as many businesses in New Bern as there is in Kinston.. Lastly, New Bern would give a decent winter, but a much higher Spring-Fall count due to the beaches, the military, the camps, and the convention center...

But, that's probably just my way of thinking..

Versus Greenville (PGV), which is nearby but much larger, and a college town? Actually, I think both Greenville and New Bern would have made more sense than ISO. They're both larger and... well, Kinston's one of those "there's no there there" cities. Unless the runway at PGV is too short, I don't understand why the airport doesn't get more scheduled service...

Kinston, NC. This must be a strange place. In 2002 most of Alitalia's 747 fleet was withdrawn and flown to Kinston. As I'm keen to visit Maxton, where there are numerous long-withdrawn NW 727s that I'd love to see, I thought it would be worth finding out whether those 747s are still at Kinston, as I need one of them. There don't appear to be any photos of them in the database (I may not be looking hard enough), and I can't find any information whatsoever about these aircraft and their current status. Incredible - this place must REALLY be off the beaten track!

Anyone know more?

That depends. I don't know whether catchment areas are officially designated or whether you are basing the number on the population figures for surrounding cities and counties. If there is some sort of official status to EWN's catchment area, like if it's meant to serve Craven County plus certain others, whereas PGV is only meant to serve (say) Pitt, then there's logic in what you're saying. I don't know the answer. I'm from that area and I still know it well enough to discuss the topic on here, but as far as facts and figures go, I have to rely on Wikipedia. (Which states that EWN's catchment areas is four counties and 176,000 people, btw.) Basically, if you look at a map of eastern NC, there are several cities of roughly similar size all about 45 minutes to one hour from each other. Kinston is in the middle of several of them. New Bern's strength is its proximity to the Outer Banks (but Jacksonville -- OAJ -- is closer, and so's ILM, depending on your destination) as well as all the historic stuff. Nice place. Small, but charming. Cherry Point is a smidge closer to New Bern but it's also close to OAJ, which I believe is getting Delta service to Atlanta shortly before ISO's ends. Greenville's twice as big, with a larger business community, and ECU has a student body of 20,000 or so. Don't get me wrong; I don't think this needs to be an either/or scenario. I think both PGV and EWN ought to have had scheduled service before ISO, whose only advantage (that I know of) was its immense and deserted airport.
