First 747-300 Special Freighter To Atlas

Curious as to why they decided to do this to a -300?Will the upper deck serve any real purpose? I mean, that's why the 747-400 freighters don't have a streched upper deck, extra weight that's not needed (?) ... just wondering, can anyone enlighten me ...... any benefits at all? I dunno ...

I don't think the SUD will have adverse affects on the performance of the plane. It adds 10,000 lbs (or so) to the fuselage, but interestingly enough, reduces drag by 4%...on the -400F's it must have been easier just to leave it off.

With the cheap buying price of the -300, it is probably still economical to keep the SUD rather than aquire a -400 or -200 model.

Well, the main reason for Atlas to go for the 300 was probably that these aircraft were available at a reasonable prize while cargo aircraft capacity is very hard to get these days...

Besides the extra weight of the SUD I see another major disadvantage : The height of the main deck below the upper deck is only 2.40m while behind the upper deck it is up to 3.10m high. Therefore the longer upper deck will definitely have a negative impact on available cargo volume.... nevertheless the staff will appreciate to have more seats for staff travel on the 743F - the 744F has only 6 seats for example....

With the lack of windows in the aft section of the UD, I'm wondering now if Boeing was able to remove that section of UD flooring to bring the space below it to main deck cargo standards (vs main deck under UD)...

I beleive the 747-300F conversions have as much upper deck floor space as the -400Fs, so yes the floorspace would have been removed to make room for 118" tall palettes (whereas only 96" can fit under the bubble).
