Air Canada Boosts Capacity In Atlantic Canada

Air Canada issued a press release today announcing an additional 16% increase in capacity to Atlantic Canada.

This is the second announcement of increased capacity in Atlantic Canada since CanJet announced it was ceasing scheduled service.

From the press release:

Overall, the airline is increasing the number of seats to destinations it serves in Atlantic Canada by over 16 per cent, or more than 10,000 additional seats per week, compared to last winter.

Newfoundland and Labrador

- 21 more non-stop flights per week during peak travel times to/from and
within Newfoundland/Labrador for a total of up to 298

- 16% year over year increase in overall capacity including:

- St. John's -Toronto: one additional flight a day for a total of up to four, representing a 32% increase in seat capacity,

- St. John's - Montréal: daily service now operated with a 120-seat A319, representing a 60% increase in seat capacity,

- Deer Lake - Montréal: daily service now operated with a 120-seat A319, representing a 140% increase in seat capacity,

- Deer Lake - Halifax: one additional flight a day for a total of up to three, representing an 85% increase in seat capacity.

New Brunswick

- 27 more non-stop flights per week during peak travel times to/from
New Brunswick for a total of up to 436

- 16% year over year increase in overall capacity including:

- Moncton - Toronto: two additional flights a day for a total of up to five, representing a 52% increase in seat capacity,

- Moncton - Halifax: one additional flight a day for a total of up to three, representing a 67% increase in seat capacity,

- Fredericton - Toronto: one additional flight a day for a total of up to four, representing a 15% increase in seat capacity,

- Fredericton - Montréal: all flights now operated with a 50-seat Dash 8-300 aircraft, representing a 21% increase in seat capacity,

- Saint John - Montréal: up to three flights a day with larger aircraft on one round-trip, representing a 15% increase in seat capacity.

Nova Scotia

- 73 more non-stop flights per week during peak travel times to/from Nova
Scotia for a total of up to 674

- 16% year over year increase in overall capacity including:

- Halifax - Toronto: one additional flight a day for a total of up to nine, representing a 14% increase in seat capacity,

- Halifax - Montréal: three additional flights a day for a total of up to seven, representing a 26% increase in seat capacity,

- Halifax - Ottawa: three additional flights a day for a total of up to six, representing a 42% increase in seat capacity.

Where are the getting all the metal for this? I thought that they had a lot of their metal tied up at this point?

Also they are letting some A319, A320 go back to the lessor!

Wow, some of those are huge increases. Still no YQM-YOW though.  Sad

It would be interesting to see what equipment is operated on these routes now.

I guess they will be receiving more E190s which will spare some A319s, enabling them to add all that capacity.

AC is obviously bolstering it's flights, anticipating that WJA may start up some new routes. Would be surprised if WJA does not start YHZ-YUL/YOW eventually. Nice for Atlantic Canada to see AC increasing capacity, though I was a bit surprised there wasn't any new routes started like YQM-YOW, or YYT-YOW............maybe next summer.

This more or less replaces the lost Canjet capacity (except St.Johns-Halifax and St.John's-Moncton).Fredericton and Montreal pick up more than was lost though.

Wow, thats a huge upgrade! I wonder why they chose to use the A319, as opposed to the E190 or E175. The flight departs just after 06:00 Nfld time, so I guess the aircraft will be overnighting in Deer Lake...

That sounds like a lot of capacity for Deer Lake. I can't see how you can fill those seats up everyday! I would expect more CRJ-705 for this route.

The A319 WAS an upgauge from an Embraer 190 that already was on the route. And the Embrarer 190 was an upgauge from 50-seat CRJ announced right after CanJet stopped scheduled ops. The route has been upgauged twice since September.....There must be demand.

WS would be crazy not to launching YOW/YUL-Maritimes service. Right now AC's market share in these markets are certainly over 95% at the moment.

Until, AC has competition out of YYT or YQM to YOW, they have little incentive to launch such routes, even if the potential to stimulate O&D traffic by 25 to +50% exists. They instead still opt to feed everyone through YUL or YHZ. It is frustrating that YHZ is the only eastern market YOW has nonstops to. Even YHM has a daily nonstop flight to YQM.

If WS wanted to take YOW really seriously they should establish a mini-hub here with flights arriving in the am from YYT, YHZ and YQM and depart for YVR, YWG and YEG and these would also connect to existing YYC, YYZ, TPA and MCO flights. The reverse would happen in the afternoon. WS' remanining YHM ops are essentially a mini-hub, they should do the same here instead of relying solely on O&D traffic.

Fredericton's new AC flights are complete gains, since C6 never never served YFC. YFC in many ways is benefitting by the loss of C6 at YQM.
