Why did the Federal Aviation Administration order a 707-020 and a 727-100?

Well I couldn't find them. But I do know the FAA uses their 727 for ILS testing and other kind of approach stuff. They come here to Prescott every year or so and test out and calibrate our ILS.

I'm waiting for certain members of this forum to start screaming that the FAA purchase is rock solid evidence of the US Government's subsidy of Boeing.

Their inspectors need to be current on the same catagory aircraft as the people they are inspecting. So that is why the FAA has a couple of the larger aircraft. They spend their time on research projects, and to keep FAA inspectors current.

I am sure now they just buy sim time.

Also the FAA had a Convair 880, so it isn't just a Boeing thing.

The 720 registered N-23, was purchased by the FAA in 1963 after it was rejected by Braniff. It was a transport for FAA officials for crash investigations and other duties. It was retired in 1975 and stored in MHV until 1983. It was used as a remote controlled testbed, until it was intentionally crashed at EDW to test a fuel additive that failed. I would assume the 727 was used for testing as well. I do remember the 727 being used for wake turbulance in the case of USAir 427 crash.
