Comparing 757 Vs A340 Looks

My post does not concern performance or cost or production issues, or for that manner, any technical issues for these two aircraft, my question is purely regarding design aesthetics, and to find out if there was any logic in choosing the initial and final shapes of the aircraft as they are today. I am going to base my initial discussion regards to the following two photographs, but since there are 100K+ photos in the database, others might be useful as well, so please contribute!

I personally think that the 757 looks good in all profiles, especially since it seems to have "longer", or "tall" main and nose wheel legs. However, the A340 shown has a "graceful design", due to the extended fuselage and sweepback of the wings (in this profile) and the fact that the wing tips are visible from both sides of the aircraft. So, would it be possible to find out what the design teams were thinking when they selected the original shape of the aircraft, or was it just generated by a computer at random from a set of models that fit the aerodynamic profile for the mission profile?


Alternatively, what would you think would happen to the looks of say, a A340, if they "borrowed" design elements of the following:


  • extra tall landing gears
  • the cockpit windows
  • optionally borrowing the nose as well
  • bigger tail
Also, what would you think if the 757 series wing was changed to accomodate 4 engines instead of two? I realise there is not currently a commercial need for it, but designers initially don't necessarily think of the ultimate end use of their machines anyway.

Possibly, all of you a.netters have done doodling and sketching of airplanes  airplane  when you were a kid, so this should be an interesting topic that hopefully will generate a lot of response, thanks in advance
