Not exactly sure when this decision was made, but it looks like Delta will not begin planned daily Atlanta-Santiago, Dominican Republic service on 9 December 2006. Delta was to operate a daily 737-800 on the route. Not a huge surprise here considering how heavy a VFR market Santiago de Los Caballeros is. Delta will continue to fly a daily flight from JFK, which they have been doing for a while.

Delta is planning to start service to Puerto Plata about that time and have upgraded this flight from a CRJ-7 to a 738. POP will be more of a high traffic route at this time of year since after Punta Canta (PUJ), it is the other large resort airport in the D.R. POP is also home to the least pricey all-inclusives in the entire Caribbean.
STI is only a short drive away, and DL probably figures it can best be served with mainline service from ATL going into POP and maximize the loads at this time of year. Also keep in mind DL has a shortage of 738 and 752 a/c.

Actually Im not too sure of the logic of higher loads to POP, STI has the bigger population and many people will probably go living abroad will come to STI in the holiday season to visit family.
OTOH, STI has more competition, but POP is smaller and is more resort-like as seen by the huge Playa Dorado complex.
Ive been to POP, and will probably visit sometime again this year to spend time with my grandfather. From MIA and SJU it had alot of connecting traffic.
