QF Experts: 767s AKL-SYD

QF have multiple layouts of 767s, but two "types" in terms of J class.

So my question is: from AKL-SYD, do they use the J class with 5 abreast seating or the J class with 6 abreast and tighter seat pitch?

Majority of QF 767's have been refitted into 6 abreast J class. I understand the 6 abreast when on the Tasman offer a portable DVD type situation, as they don't have individual IFE like the 5 abreast (however this was a while back - could be incorrect).

I fly the 6 abreast in J from SYD and MEL to PER nearly every week, and its OK. For the money though, the better experience in J would be on EK.

FYI - Air New Zealand across the Tasman on a 744 or 777 would be a bed product, however food/service is "Tasman Express" and even in J it doesn't really cut it for what you pay.

Emirates would be cheaper, but the downside there is they only offer one flight per day.

I took this flight back in June in J class. The plane I was on had the 6 abreast seating, it was the 7am flight so breakfast was served (only ok!) and I watched a movie, which as was mentioned above played on a portable DVD player brought to my seat. The flight was fine, but as I had just transferred from a BKK flight I didn't pay too much attention to the surroundings.
I did come back via EK, and that was fantastic, def. worth having a look at.

Thanks for that - didn't see the 1 rotation on weekends. Still the bulk of flying isn;t with these birds, so chances of getting those seats mid week would be slim?

I flew NZ5 LAX/AKL/MEL in July, and I was in Premium Economy in the bubble. The difference in service and food/beverage was extremely notable, and what I saw taken up to the J class seats just a few rows in front of me was not the same as what I had seen previously on the LAX/AKL flight.

If it has changed, for the best. But for Premium Economy, I was pretty cranky after 14 hours through to AKL, to be given a Tasman Express type service.

I'm glad you guys are having fun talking about another topic or suggesting other, better ways to spend my money  Wink , but the reason I asked specifically was that it was going to be part of an already booked award ticket (read FREE of charge flight). I was going to get to CHC by flying a paid EK F ticket, to see the experience, and CHC to AKL on NZ Y, but returning from AKL, EK wouldn't have gotten me back to SYD in time for an 11:35A flight. And EK would not have been FREE...

Turns out that I'm not allowed to go that direction though and use a free connection (can't cross the Tasman sea twice on the award, even if you pay for one of the legs), and I'm worried that if some delay happens and I miss my SYD-LAX flight, QF won't be required to re-accommodate me, so the point is moot, and I'm thinking of visiting PER instead and saving New Zealand for another trip entirely, taking NZ roundtrip from LAX in a few months.

As for Perth, I can get a J seat on the PER-SYD redeye to connect to QF149 back to LAX (5 hour layover in the F lounge can't be all that bad...). Again, that seat is FREE because I have an F award ticket on QF8/QF149.

Using a CO OnePass Qantas series 1 award, 135,000 miles buys a QF First international award with one free stopover and one free open jaw (on Domestic J if it requires a connecting flight). It even provides for F travel from your city in the USA to LAX. One of the best FF mileage values around. The hard part is finding a seat, but I already did that. I've already booked the longhaul, and adding the PER segment would be a free flight beyond a $35 change fee.

I'll probably be going to Darwin before PER to shoot a music video, which would be a paid for ticket by the producer. So all I have to buy is the Darwin-Perth segment. I'll likely do JetConnect on the 717 and stop in Alice Springs. The non-stop doesn't fit my schedule, and all other options on QF or other airlines seem to take you back east/south to connect.

PER-SYD redeye is on the 743, so I hope I can get a seat upstairs. I haven't been upstairs on a 747 since I was a kid and AA had a lounge up there in the 1970s. Fell asleep up there a couple of times...

NZ's B777 is very nice, but not in the same class as an EK flight, providing full international standard cuisine, along with ICE. But EK does not compete with NZ and QF on frequency. If the one EK service a day suits - and you can get a seat, it's a slam dunk.

The tasman cafe meal/snack service is on all aircraft operating from NZ to Australia excluding Perth in economy ..Business class service is also available on these flights and service and meals are the same/similar to the long haul flights..

QF has 2 main types of 763... RR powered and GE powered.
The RR birds are ex-BA and have 4 doors on each side.
The GE birds are standard 763 layout with 2 doors each side and 2 emergency exits on each side.

As for configuration there are several different configs depending on the aircraft. There is a Tasman configured a/c, domestic configured and intl configured.
The Tasman flights do however not just have tasman configured a/c.
Some flights have 5 across Jclass and some have 6 across.

Yes, you could actually do this now by calling Qantas reservations and they will confirm J and reissue your ticket if you are willing to fork out the cash. If not, allow at least 90-180 minutes at the airport prior to go to the ticket counter, purchase a seat, if one is available. Be careful that Platinum, Gold, and Qantas Club members are allowed to request points on departure upgrades to business from 3 hours prior to flight departure on the day.

Quite frequently, it is a busy day and a popular flight.

Personally I think anything except row 15 in the bubble (exit row and quite cramped on the window seats) and row 1 in the main deck - quite cramped and close together. Personally I like row 5 in the main deck centre - you get your own closet for storage and no seats in front of you.

My return flight is PER-MEL-SYD in J because the last J award disappeared before I could book it on PER-SYD (both red-eyes). On a Wednesday night, is the 743 redeye to SYD usually full in J? If I arrived at the airport early and seats are still available, do you think there's a chance they would switch me from the PER-MEL-SYD flight to the PER-SYD flight since the fares are the same?
