In 1965 I was offered a job by Capitol International and being 18 at the time, living in the UK, I was very keen to take up the offer which involved a year or so training in the US.
In October that year, LBJ made a major speech on Vietnam policy which included the idea of drafting non US nationals living and working in the US.
Under a great deal of pressure from my parents I gave up the chance of the job which was to train to become a Station Assistant for the airline's then growing European arm which was handling many MATS (as it then was) charters plus a growing affinity group charter market.
Does anyone have any information about the airline and its set up at that time, or can anyone point me to any publication or web site as I can find very little about the airline other than published fleet lists, photos and my own collection of slides?

Although I have never seen a web site that even mentions Capitol, I can tell you a few things myself. Back around the time you could have worked for them, they mainly did military airlift flights, mostly from various airforce bases to South East Asia. I believe at that time they used DC-8's exclusively. At one time, they operated C-46 Commandos. After deregulation hit in the US, the began to operate scheduled flights at first from JFK to Aquadilla, San Juan, and Miami and later to Philadelphia, Los Angelas, San Francisco, Boston, Brussels, and Frankfurt. DC-10's were added in the early 80's and were painted in an attractive red, white, and blue scheme. They operated "skysaver" flights coast to coast and briefly LAX-LGW. They offered "star spangled service" on these flights (whatever that meant). A few DC-8's were also painted in that scheme, but for the most part every Capitol aircraft had its own scheme. At the very end, the operated A300's, DC-8's and 727's. They also added Nashvile service and the company headquarters were in Smyrna, Tennesee. They operated as a sister carrier to Arrow Air. They went bankrupt in 1985 and have come back a few times since. Once with a 727-200 painted in the exact same scheme as the DC-10.

Many thanks, that has filled in a few details. For your information, I first came across them working at Shannon in 1965 on a summer vacation job. I could tell you a whole raft of stories about their L1049s, C-46s and some of the crews.

One other question, were they always based at Smyrna as I was dealing with Wilmington, Delaware and was supposed to go there to join the company?
